We Are Famous

Hi all,

What with the high cost of Europe these days, I thought that you might want to know that my little town of Madison, GA is listed in Conde' Nast Traveler as an "April Deal of the Month".

Hi ira, I saw that in CNT but didn't realize that is where you live. That is fun! Believe me I doubt my city will ever be in CNT although it is a nice place to live. Congratulations!

degas Mar 28th, 2005 02:01 PM

ira, did they ever fix your only stoplight and pave any of the roads? I'd hate to wreck the front-end alignment on my new BMW!

Flyboy Mar 28th, 2005 02:08 PM

Must be a pretty high-brow place to be listed in Conde(scending) Nast(y) Traveler! ;)

(Before anyone gets all defensive, I have a subscription, too.)

ira Mar 28th, 2005 02:10 PM

>did they ever fix your only stoplight and pave any of the roads? <

In anticipation of the major influx of visitors, we have added a stoplight.

We are working on the paved roads.

ira,
You get Conde' Nast'?? I had pegged you clearly in "coach" and 2-3 star camp. Or is there a recent event that has put you in another league?

ninasdream Mar 28th, 2005 03:19 PM

Ira - Be careful! When my parents found a house on in a little out of the way place, they were delighted. I was surprised by her bland description to neighbors. When I asked my mother she said she didn't want everyone moving there. That night, I dreamt that my father went on the Tonight Show, and as a result of his comments to Johnny, they had to build a second highway and bridge for all the new people coming to see the area. :)

Funny you should mention, ira. We were considering Madison, Ga. for our annual five month holiday, but we became dazed by the wide choice of resorts, spas, five star hotels, and safari packages. It just became too mind boggling for us. So maybe it will be back to Paris, Rome, and London after all.

FainaAgain Mar 28th, 2005 03:37 PM

Ira, so you have electricty?

Maybe you even have television?

Gardyloo Mar 28th, 2005 03:42 PM

I think you misinterpreted, Ira - wasn't it M'badyzhszy'n in the Republic of Georgia?

minimn Mar 29th, 2005 05:03 AM

If you do visit Ira's hometown, do not miss the microcar museum. Will open again after June 1, check it out at www.microcarmuseum.com. Fantastic!!

starrsville Mar 29th, 2005 05:33 AM

It IS one of the prettiest towns in Georgia. Full of antebellum homes and a charming downtown square. If anyone plans a visit, the Christmas tour of homes is a great treat!

massagediva Mar 29th, 2005 06:02 AM

Hi, Ira. Will you be offering free walking tours and sweet tea to the hordes of invading Fodorites?

ira Mar 29th, 2005 06:17 AM

Hey y'all,

Of course we have electricity. We got that, along with indoor plumbing, long about 1936 when the WPA came to town.

The post office was built in the Hoover administration.

>we became dazed by the wide choice of resorts, spas, five star hotels, and safari packages. <

Actually, they are not in town. They are down by the lake. See, for example,
www.ritzcarlton.com/resorts/ reynolds_plantation/default.html.

Those microcars are really cute, mini.

>the Christmas tour of homes is a great treat!<
As is the Spring Tour, with Afternoon Tea.

>Will you be offering free walking tours and sweet tea to the hordes of invading Fodorites?

Our local guides offer walking tours and carriage rides. Sweet tea on the porch is a given.

>You get Conde' Nast'?? I had pegged you clearly in "coach" and 2-3 star camp.<

The two are not mutually exclusive. "Fly cheap, sleep cheap, eat well".

You might not remember the details of your 11 hr flt in coach, but a meal of truffled foie gras will stay with you for years.

And I bet you don't have to pay $600 for lunch, either!!

starrsville Mar 29th, 2005 12:24 PM

For anyone who wants to experience one of the prettiest Southern towns in spring glory, here's the May tour information -
http://www.uncleremus.org/madmorg/sprgtour.htm

Ira will have to provide directions to his front porch for tea himself!

Let me know if you will be coming.

starrsville Mar 29th, 2005 03:23 PM

Ira, if anyone RSVP's I'll be glad to bring some peach cobbler!

alya Mar 29th, 2005 03:48 PM

Ira,

I'm intrigued by the Cream Cheese and Pineapple Sandwiches.
Never let it be said that I won't try anything new!
What's the best type of bread to use?

letsgobird Mar 29th, 2005 03:54 PM

Ira, I had a friend that went to a horse ranch-I think it was called Southern Cross Farms, she absolutely adored it!! Are you familiar with it? BTW-I live in Madison also-Madison, Al

starrsville Mar 29th, 2005 03:57 PM

alya,
My guess would be "white bread" - Sunbeam if you can get it!

alya Mar 29th, 2005 04:13 PM

Somehow I knew the answer would probably be White Bread :-(

Well, I have the Cream Cheese and I have Crushed Pineapple, so I think I'll try it with 7 grain and if it's not too bad I might even splash out on Sunbeam.

Wish me luck!

BTW - Anytime you want to share your recipe for Peach Cobbler -let me know.

starrsville Mar 29th, 2005 04:23 PM

Ya know, I googled "cream cheese and pineapple sandwich" and came up with some variations that would go well on 7 grain. They added all sorts of other stuff.

Having said that, the Southern version is on soft white bread (or loaf bread as my grandmother always called it) and is just cream cheese instead of mayo, pineapple (my g'ma used sliced) and SOMETIMES a piece of iceberg lettuce.

I have a friend at the historical society so I'll try to see what their plans are for the box lunch!

kswl Mar 29th, 2005 04:47 PM

Ira, I spent an afternoon in Madison in mid-December on the way back from a conference in Athens. It is a charming town, with a dangerous ice cream shop. You are lucky to live in such a beautiful area. For some reason I thought you live in Watkinsville.

rapunzll Mar 29th, 2005 04:58 PM

What part of GA is Madison in? I'm going to be moving to the state and will have to check it out!

starrsville Mar 29th, 2005 05:17 PM

Madison is about an hour southeast of Atlanta - on I-20 as you head east toward South Carolina.

It has been called "the town too pretty to burn". Supposedly, Sherman's roommate at West Point was from Madison and he gave orders that it not be burned on his infamous March to the Sea.

I'm not sure if that is lore, or true, but it has one of the finest collections of antebellum homes in Georgia.

If you go, stop by the Blue Willow restaurant in Social Circle. Also, stop by Covington for more pretty homes. The town may look familiar - it's where the TV show "In the Heat of the Night" and the pilot and first season of "The Dukes of Hazzard" were shot.

rapunzll Mar 29th, 2005 05:31 PM

Thanks Starr! Sounds interesting! That will be about three hours from where I'll be, very doable for a weekend!

ira Mar 30th, 2005 08:08 AM

Hi letsgo,

>..Southern Cross Farms..<
A very nice place for a weekend or so.

See http://www.southcross.com/

>I'm intrigued by the Cream Cheese and Pineapple Sandwiches....What's the best type of bread to use? <

Actually, we go for cream cheese and pimento spread. Any store-bought sliced white bread in a plastic wrapper will do. Allow the sandwiches to sit covered in the fridge overnight, then leave them open on a plate for a few hours for real Sothren flavor. :)

Hi kswl,

>For some reason I thought you live in Watkinsville. <

No, we only visit it for our weekly gelato fix at Il Gelato - yummmmm.

Where will you be living, rapunzil?

This being a European forum, how do you get to Madison, GA, from Paris, France?
Ozarks Bill
