The 5th arrondissement may be more "bohemian", but not the 6th in the Saint Germain area. It's full of upscale shops, where I can only afford to window shop

You friend is from Paris, so maybe the area she prefers is around the 17th and the 8th, but I think since you are a first time visitor, you'll want to see things close to the 6th. It's also easy to find bus and metro in the 6th, so you can really go anywhere from there.

Best,
Sandy

I think there may have been an understanding in the apt. location, or else your friend just has very traditional, expensive taste and prefers very upscale locations. YOur friend isn't

St-Germain hasn't been Bohemian in years, unfortunately, but maybe compared to the 8th, it is -- Armani, Vuitton, Cartier and Dior shops around the St-Germain/Rennes intersection aren't exactly la vie boheme. The remark about the car is really peculiar. Maybe you didn't understand each other, but if you find a 2 bedrm apt. near the Lux. Gardens at a price you like, I'd grab it. It is true there aren't a lot of big grocery stores near there, but it depends where this apt is as a lot of people advertise "near" something which they know is desirable and it's perhaps half a mile away.

Take yourself and your children to Nain Bleu, a very nice toy shop.

Also take the children to the Tuillerie Gardens for the fun fair and ferris wheel. I think there are also pony rides all summer.
