We went from Beilstein to Burg Eltz earlier this month, but I must admit when I see your message I am confused about what help you need.

Are you driving from Beilstein? Do you wish driving directions to the upper parking lot? Please clarify.

Yes, we want to arrive at the upper parking area, and take the shorter walk down to the castle and we will be arriving from Beilstein. MaiTaiTom mentioned directions on his trip report website, but I was not sure if they were complete.

This is what I got from the Burg Eltz website:

"The official car park at Eltz castle (cars, buses and motorbikes) is near the St. Antonius chapel and can be reached via Münstermaifeld and Wierschem. To reach the castle from here is no more than a comfortable walk of about 800 metres. In Münstermaifeld continue in the direction of Wierschem, then follow the road signs to Eltz Castle's forest car park"

Are these the directions to the upper lot? I have heard mention of shorter and longer ways to reach the castle but am unsure of which one this is. Rick Steves is supposed to have a good way in, but I cannot find the exact directions.

Thanks!

Plagerizing myself:

"I am not a big Rick Steves' devotee, but sometimes he dispenses valuable advice, and he did not fail us on this morning.  His shortcut to Burg Eltz would save at least an hour's time (both driving and hiking), and I endeavored to convey this valuable information to the other couple.   I hoped the advice had not fallen upon deaf ears, because I could tell they were not in the mood for a long hike.

Our new friends from Texas departed for the castle ten minutes before we climbed inside our car.   I read in Steves' book not to follow the signs to Burg Eltz once reaching Moselkern, because those signs led to longer hikes up to the castle.

Instead, we ignored the Eltz signs in Moselkern and followed the signs to Munstermaifeld as he had suggested.  We kept the faith even though it seemed we were headed in the completely opposite direction of the castle.  After six kilometers we thought we were lost, but stuck to our convictions.

At seven kilometers, a "T" in the road materialized.  Sure enough, signs to Burg Eltz were again in full view.  We turned left and drove though Wierscheim.   From that town's exit sign it was only 2 kilometers to the Burg Eltz upper parking facility.  It was a pleasant 15-minute walk down to the castle from there. "

The couple who did not follow our advice showed up AFTER we had taken the tour. The wife was not pleased that her husband had taken our advice. Have fun. The castle is great.

Below is cut and paste link to my blog (with pictures of Burg Eltz and Mosel area. Give pics about 30 -45 seconds to all download.

" that her husband had taken our advice..."

Meant, of course, to say "had NOT taken our advice..." My fingers are working ahead of my brain today.

Thanks Tom - I had printed out that part of your trip report and just wanted to make sure those directions were all I needed. Sometimes little parts can be missing.

My post from last night made me look like an idiot, lol. (not that I need that much help) I took a 10mg Ambien before bed(to test it out for use on the plane tomorrow) and it apparently also puts the logical thought function to sleep. I will definately wait til we are in the air to take it.

We followed MaiTaiTom's advise when we drove from Beilstein to Burg Eltz in May. Worked great! You can also get some fabulous photos of Burg Eltz on the walk down from the parking lot.

"We followed MaiTaiTom's advise"

Bettyk...You are indeed brave. I'm always happy to hear that a recommendation I made was successfully completed, and that you did not end up in Berlin by something I wrote.

You're right, the views of Burg Eltz on the way down from the parking lot are pretty spectacular. There are a couple of nice shots from different spots on "Day Two" of my blog.

We went that way, too, earlier this month. From Beilstein cross the river at Karden. Then follow the advice from MaiTaiTom.

Make sure you get an English tour, though. If not, they sell you an English fact sheet for $.50 Euro. Not a great option in our opinion. We were wishing that we had called ahead and met up with an English tour.

We also did not get an English tour (no English-speaking people there at the time, but us). Luckily, our guide was very nice and gave us snippets in English and answered questions as the tour went on.

If you get on a German tour, don't be afraid to ask the guide (politely, of course) a question and perhaps you'll get lucky, too.

I plan to arrive in Moselkern by train. Can anyone advise me as to the easiest way to reach the castle either by public transportation or on foot or a combination of both?

You leave the train station, exit right and follow the Burg Eltz signs for about 20 minutes up, down, and inland along a residential street. The signs are sparse so just make sure you stay on the main road. Then take the marked trail and it's a pleasant 60 minute hike total between the station and the castle through the pine forest.

Thanks all - the instructions worked like a charm. We headed north from Beilstein (cutting through the countryside instead of along the river) crossed at Treis Kardin and drove to then most of the way through Moselkern -ignoring the Burg Eltz signs (which practically gave my husband apoplexy) and headed to Munstermaifeld. It all fell into place from there. The walk was still a bit steep in places but no problem for us. There was a red van set up as a shuttle (1.50 euro) for those folks who might not have wanted to tackle the walk up or down. Great place, great setting, great tour.

Happy,

Glad to hear it worked out for you. Did you get an English tour? How did you like the castle?

Hi Dee Dee:

We loved the castle and we did get an english tour.

There was a quite large British school group there (middle school agers) that got split into two, and the guide asked if anyone else waiting in the court yard wanted to come in with them. I hesitated, sometimes kids that age (especially in a group)are not really interested and can be rather annoying, but we wanted to at least have a chance to hear the english version.

I need not have worried. They were so well behaved and a delight to be with. I complimented the group leader at the end of the tour on their good manners. She gave a little laugh and roll of her eyes - guess they are not angels ALL the time.

The castle itself was fabulous and just extrordinary to me that something like it could still be in private ownership. We just loved the walk down from the parking area. The picturesque setting caused me to take approx. 30 different pictures from various vantage points. Thank heavens for digital cameras!
