My husband and I are thinking about taking a trip to Ireland next summer. Has anyone ever rented a boat from Shannon and traveled the waterways. Sounded like an interesting way to see Ireland. If you have, was it a good experience, any recommnedations on companies, can you rent a car when you get to the towns or do you really need one.

I've been on the Shannon a number of times. It is indeed the most relaxing way to see Ireland and I would thoroughly recommend it.

We've always used Emerald Star (www.emeraldstar.ie)when renting a boat, as I've found their service to be excellent. However there are a number of other outfits. Carrick Craft (www.cruise-ireland.com) is another large outfit you see on the river, so you should check them out as well.

We generally concentrated on the area in the upper Shannon (around Carrick-on-Shannon). I hear the Erne Waterway is spectacular, but we've yet to visit.

I wouldn't bother renting a car, unless you plan on visiting a large town, but there aren't many large towns on the Shannon! However you can rent bikes and keep them on the boat and explore that way if desired.

We mostly moored in different villages, explored on foot, had lunch in little pubs, then back on the boat for more cruising.

Definitely relaxing. Definitely memorable. Enjoy!

I know Emereald Star has a good reputation and I love the Carrick on Shannon area so it is a great place to start. Relatives of mine do this every year and have a great time. Forget car rentals you will not find one in small villages and you will not really need one. Post when you get back!
