Washer

The light keeps flashing on the "pret a ranger" and keeps beeping...we've been here for two weeks and it has never done that. We're trying to look up translations but it's not very helpful.

My German washer and dryer continue to beep forlornly forever until you turn the dial to "off". Yes, the cycle is finished, but they want care and attention.

This is why, when we bought our Miele washer and dryer, to make sure we got models that had a "silence" button. Otherwise, they won't stop nagging you.

And, in fact, why, in our rental houses we had to leave instructions, and label them 'washer' and 'dryer.' We found people putting clothes into the dryer and waiting for the water to arrive. Despite that, we still found people who took the tabs out of the box marked 'Calgon' - dishwasher - with a picture of a glass and plate on the front, and put them into the clothes washer. Things which are obvious to someone who knows are a great mystery to someone who doesn't.

In our Paris apartment last fall, we had one of those combination washer/dryers. Of course, there were user manuals for everything else in the apartment, but not for this machine. The brand (Indesit) was not familiar and I could not figure out what to do from the various symbols. Finally, I decided to Google: brand, model number and user manual English. Et voilà, found one.
