Warwick Castle

Has anyone ever been to Warwick Castle? I am considering it as a possible daytrip. I have lived in Engalnd and have seen most of the major sights like in London, etc. so I am now looking for other places to visit. Is it worth visiting or are there other castles that are a better day trip from the Bristol area?

Ri'Anna, definately go to Warwick Castle!! It is one of the most wonderfully presented historical sights in England. It is one of few places I can keep going back to again and again. This is one sight that is not run by the British Heritage Group rather it is operated and maintained by Madame Toussauds (sp?) of the Wax Museum fame. It is really interesting, and the last time we were there they had costumed docents on hand to answer questions and a new Medieval Exhibit. It is a splended day trip from London and worth it just to see the lovely countryside around there.

Don't forget to go to Coventry if you go to Warwick...

I agree - Warwick Castle is definitely worth a day trip....the tour and castle itself are wonderful and the Madame Tussaud's figures really add to the sense of history ! The grounds and gardens are also lovely and provide a nice resting place after being on your feet for a long time. Try to avoid going June - Sept....we were there in July and it was so crowded, the tour took twice as long and some rooms were literally jammed with wall-to-wall tourists !

I agree with everyone - Warwick is the quintessential English castle and well worth seeing. The town center of Warwick is also deserving of a visit. There you'll find St. Mary's Church, a doll museum, medieval buildings and several atmospheric old pubs with good pub-grub.

Thanks so much, everyone, for your responses!

My husband and myself went to London 3yrs ago-we had no car so I booked two day trips by motot coach. One of the trips was to Warwick Castle - I was taken back - by the setting and the presence of the wax figures (who were very, very life-like)- in there settings. It was one of the highlights of our trip .

I would highly recommend Warwick Castle but it is a 1/2 day activity. We stopped there from Strattford upon Avon. My wife liked Strattford but I loved Warwick Castle. You can tour the entire grounds and get a good workout up and down stairs some in tight spirals somewhat dark, very England.

Go, you will not be disappointed.

Ri' Anna,
Oh my yes, Warick is a must! What a fantastic castle, the torture chamber, and the dungeon are intense. I think if us Americans used those methods maybe our crime rate wouldn't be so high..lol

One more vote for Warwick and it's Madame Tussaud figures. You can easily go from Paddington. We had lunch at Fanshawe's near the museum. Lovely castle and pretty little walking town. Beware the train on Sunday though.
