Warning - Theft from Locked Rental Car

Warning if you're renting a car in Italy. I have family on vacation in Italy right now. They pulled into a rest stop near Salerno the other day, locked the car with a keyless remote, and went inside. When they returned to the car, their most critical bag - with passports, computer, etc... was gone. There was no sign of forced entry. The police said criminals are using an electronic device to prevent the remote from locking the car. So, double check the handles and make sure they're really locked.

I am sure your family is upset Somewhere but your posting their experience is a good reminder one should never leave anything in their car. And especially important documents and valuables as speckles said. It is not just tourist that these people go after..they are just as interested in items in Italian residents cars. None of the Italians I know ever leave anything in their car for this very reason.

I hope that this incident will not completely ruin your family's vacation.

What a bummer! I think you need to be mindful of your important documents wherever you are.

Theft like that is happening all over the place! I am in Dallas and have heard of that happening in parking lots around here. Thieves are slick, no doubt. Sorry for your family.
