Wardrobe Advice Needed
Now that I have been advised to pack "light", what do you think about an "all-black" wardrobe for early September? I am a New Yorker and this is what I basically wear. Will the French think I am "in mourning"?

Thanks again.

so long as your all black wardrobe does not include gaudy advertisements, you will do just fine in paris

Black is always fine - you can't go wrong with it. A colorful scarf always goes well with it. I remember a fashion journalist interviewing a fashion designer a couple of years ago and they were saying how it's now all colors in the fashion world. They were both wearing black. I just got back from Italy and I am also from NY. Overall, I packed too much. And I saw several NYers at my hotels who packed WAY too much. Best advice is to keep it simple, black is great, but bring things that all mix and match together. I found black to be a little hot. Overall, I wore khaki skirts and light colored tops...easy to walk around in and comfortable. I think I may have worn shorts 1-2 days. Shorter skirts were my favorite because I could wear them into churches and out to dinner and such...But if they are too short - churches won't allow you in. I also brought two light weight sweaters, used both. I wore black pants on the way over - great idea and you are on the plane forever. I found that everyone wears different stuff and believe me when I tell you that no matter what you wear - they will know you're American. Only one night was I confused for an Italian - and I later realized that everything I had on was Italian.

Black is always 'in'!

People who wear all black have no real personality. Men like red. Wear red!

I was in Paris in Nov, and everyone was in Black. I was quite surprised to find that everyone on this forum was right. Or not that they were right but rather that it was true. Black on black on black, as a Californian I would never wear all black however in NY I understand it is also worn. My trips to NY have always been in warmer months so maybe that's why I didn't see that and my trip to Paris was in cold weather so possibly that explains the all black. I wondered if my red, white and yellow sweathers and jackets gave me away. Oh well, I just purchased a heavy hooded jacket for Iceland this winter in White!

Virginia,

I am leaving for Paris, Provence and Nice on Thursday. I am packing black and tan so I can mix and match. I will probably go with all black for Paris; so it is not too early to be wearing black. No matter what we do we still look like tourists, so don't worry and have a great time.
