Wanted: A durable travel umbrella
Having recently purchased tickets for another May trip to Germany and Austria, finding a sturdy travel umbrella is high on the priority list. On our last trip, DH and I went through 3 umbrellas... EACH The wind blows them inside out and the compact folding umbrellas can only handle about a day of that sort of battering before becoming utterly useless.
We wear raincoats but umbrellas are also very helpful when the wind is blowing the rain sideways. Has anyone found a solution for this?

Thanks MECindy.
The family-size umbrella potentially looks great since it was vents to help prevent the wind from blowing the umbrella inside out and breaking the spokes.
I've been browsing around on the web and it appears that REI also has some supposedly "windproof" umbrellas. Maybe we'll get one of each and then I can write a comparison on Fodors

I highly recommend LLBean vented umbrella, but I'm not sure ours are still available - thick "grip" handle.
Umbrellas that are a bit larger than the "compact" umbrellas, are vented, and have a comfortable handle, weigh considerably more, but are much better.
Venting is crucial if you don't want the an umbrella that turns inside out or blows away!
A larger diameter not only gives you better coverage, the smaller ones pour rain down your back.
