Want to hit the right cities in Italy
 

I have about 8-10 days to spend in Italy next spring. I know Rome, Florence, and Venice are on my list, but any thoughts on how long to spend in each and any other cities I shouldn't miss. Sightseeing, shopping, and partying are my to do list.

In 8-10 days you really shouldn't do more than 3 cities. And, even keeping to just 3 won't guarantee seeing and doing everything you want in each. What you'll be missing, obviously, is the rest of Italy! When I first came onto the forum and was planning an Italy trip, I remember a couple posters said you need at least 6 weeks to really see all of Italy...and even then, you won't see everything. <BR>Rome to Florence to Venice is the traditional route for a first-time trip. They are three great cities. Go with the attitude that you'll definitely go back again and enjoy the 3 sites you'll be in!

Agree with Howard. Get over the idea of cramming anything more into your 8-10 days and focus now in WHAT to see in those three cities. Suggest 3 days in Rome, 3 days in Florence, an 2 days in Venice. Arrive in Rome; depart from Venice.

I agree with Maira and Howard. I just got back from a week in Rome, it was barely enough! I still have things I wish I would have done....give it a quick overview like Maira suggested, and then decide if you want to return.

I would definitely try to squeeze at least one night at Verona. You will be passing that way anyway. Incidentally Verona can be a good place to stay, and take day trips into Venice - much cheaper and less hassles with luggage in Venice.

While Verona may be worth a visit, I certainly wouldn't do it if it meant sacrificing an overnight stay in Venice. There is a world of difference between experiencing Venice between just being a daytripper and staying overnight.

You will need all ten days just to see the three cities on your list (4 Rome, 3 Venice, 3 Florence), and even that will not allow you enough time in Rome. I definitely would not add any other destinations if this is all the time you have.

Here's an alternative view: take a gamble that this will NOT be your last or only trip to Italy - - the odds are about 10 to 1 on that score. <BR> <BR>And enjoy the country even more by spending at least 2 or 3 nights in one or two little towns you never even heard of - - there's a long list of little non- (or not so) touristy places that will fit the bill. Yes, it will mean that you will have to short change at least one of your "big three" by taking just a "taste" - - say a single 24 hr stay. They'll still be there on your next trip. <BR> <BR>And you will fall ever more deeply in love with Italy. <BR> <BR>Best wishes, <BR> <BR>Rex
