Walking walls in Dubrovnik

Trying to plan our short, one-day visit to Dubrovnik in May and we want to walk the walls. I understand that you can only walk in one direction but of the 6 posts about this on various websites, 3 say you walk clockwise and 3 say it's counter-clockwise. Looking for a knowledgeable Fodorite to break the tie! Thanks!

When I went, it was counterclockwise -- but may I ask why it matters? There won't be any question once you are there....

lol I knew it sounded like a dumb question, but it affects which gate we want to use as our starting point..

OK -- how? Maybe we can be of use if we know what matters to you....

We walked counterclockwise.

Counter clockwise. If you start at the Pile Gate that means that you approach the ocean/cliff side of the walk in the first half. The beauty of this is that it is the most scenic and, if you are running out of time, you can disembark off the wall at the Polce gate and know that you've seen the best part (in my opinion). Additionally, exiting there would put you in reasonably close proximity to the Busa Bar on the cliff if you're so inclined! That being said, it is certainly worth doing the entire journey.
