Walking Thru Byzantium or other reading for my trip to Istanbul?
Does anyone know where I can buy a copy of this book? I'm leaving for Istanbul in three weeks, Amazon doesn't have a copy and I've googled without success. I'm fascinated in the history of Turkey and think this would be a great companion guide. Any other suggestions?
Also, I've read Pamuk but would like suggestions for other novels set in Turkey. I particularly like mysteries, but good writing is essential!

There are some easy-to-read detective stories by Jason Goodwin that you might like to look at.
Do you mean Strolling through Istanbul by John Freely and someone? If you do, I found it rather out-of-date when I tried one of the walks in summer.

Oh thanks gertie - I just looked up Jason Goodwin and I'll certainly give his books a try - sounds like fun. As for Walking Thru Byzantium, it's by Jan Kostenec and contains computer generated reconstructions of the Great Palace area in Istanbul. I saw some of the reconstructions on the Byzantium 1200 website and they look fabulous. There's also a uTube link that I'm going to check out as well. The only trouble is that I probably won't remember what I've seen unless I have a guide in hand, if you know what I mean? Maybe I can find the book in Istanbul?

Ho boy, have I got the mysteries you will love - the Inspector
Ikman series by Barbara Nadal.
Nadal is a great writer and each book is sited in either
Istanbul or an equally intriguing area of Turkey. Plus
her characters are believable and cover the gamut of
Turkish 'types' from all walks of life in this tumultuous
country .
I learned more about Turkey from reading her books than I
ever did from guides (or Pamuk - who just depresses me).
I had finished her books b/4 I visited Turkey and I
think they added to my enjoyment of the country.
