Walking shoes and Dress Attire
I'm going on a 14 day escorted tour through Rome, Paris and London in October. I really need suggestions on a pair of comfortable walking shoes to purchase. I also would take suggestions on what cities I need to wear certain attire in (e.g. scarves, pants, long sleeve shirts). I know some churches have a specific dress code and I have no clue what to pack! If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.

There are many threads on comfortable shoes in the archives. Just type walking shoes into the search box and you should find quite a bit.

As pavfec suggested, just do a search on comfortable shoes.
That said, here are some brands to get you started: Mephisto, Ecco, Born, Aerosoles, Naturalizer, Donald J Pliner, Easy Spirit. I love zappos.com - you can sort through TONS of shoes that would meet your needs there; they have great customer service and free shipping on returns. (I'm not affiliated!) |
You for sure need your shoulders and knees covered in the churches in Rome. I'm not certain about France, but I always made sure I was covered in all the churches. To me it's a respect thing. October SHOULD be cool enough that you can wear a sweater, jacket, or such without being uncomfortable. Also try shoebuy.com for shoes. Soft Walkes and Clarkes are also good brands and stylish.

Hi sw,
>You for sure need your shoulders and knees covered in the churches in Rome.< And everything in between. :) ((I)) |
Ira...LOL!!!!!

Reminds me of a grandpa's directions to grandchild on taking a bath -
Start at the top of your head and wash down as much as possible. Then, start at your feet and wash up as much as possible. Then, wash your possibles. |
Cute, starrsville! I've not heard that before. Will come in handy for hoped-for-someday grandchildren.

I survived in Italy two weeks in two pairs of shoes. Mary Jane type ECCO's that worked with pants, jeans, khakis and any kind of socks. A second pair of dressier Mephisto's that worked with thin sock and hose or bare legs for nights out when I had to dress for formal affairs. Usually I have a pair of shoes to match everything I wear, so this was quite an accomplishment. Both were black and they are going with me in October when we return.

Thanks everyone! I'm a 25 yr old girl that has to have clothing "options", so this is going to be hard for me! I'm confident I can do it though. I still want to know if my whole arms have to be covered? Are Carpi's acceptable in churches? I still think it may be a little warm in Rome in October and need to be positive what to pack.
Any suggestions on "must see" sites in either Rome, Paris and London? |
swp99; capris are acceptable. Short sleeves are too. October can still be nice, but could be pouring with rain too. Just make sure you have comfortable shoes, that you can walk on all day. I just wear black sneaker type shoes when sightseeing, and that's fine everywhere. And London will probably be quite a bit colder than Rome, so take some sweaters/cardigans. And a raincoat, but not a very heavy one.
