Walking Distances - Rome

Walking Distances - Rome
I am trying to get a feel for distances in Rome. Our hotel is near the Pantheon. Can anyone tell me approximate walking distances from the Pantheon to
a) Termini
b) Vatican
c) Colosseum
I understand Rome is a big city - and I am trying to get a feel for when we will want to walk and when we will want to use cabs/metro/bus.

Hi Rick,
Of course, a lot depends on how fast you walk, how hot it is, how easily distracted you are (which I always am in Rome!!)
I usually stay in roughly the same area as the Pantheon and I would estimate about 30 minutes' walk to the first two (in opposite directions, of course) and perhaps 40 minutes to the Colossem.
A better guide than my guess-timates is to use Google maps. You put in your destination, click "directions" and also select the little stick figure of a man walking. Then it will give you a suggested route and an approximate time to walk.

I think you're wise to try to get a sense of distances before you arrive -- Rome's historic centre is really quite compact and it can be difficult, just looking at a map in a guide book, to figure out how long it really takes to get anywhere. I've taken the bus or cab only to realize afterwards that it really wouldn't have been far -- and much more interesting --to have walked !

It's about a 30 minute walk to all three (in three different directions).
I would walk whenever you are not super rushed and it's not raining. There is a LOT you will see (and want to stop for) when walking from your hotel in any of these directions (and do choose a different route should you decide to walk back afterwards).
It's about a 10 minute taxi ride, should you decide to go that route - a bus could take longer depending on how long you have to wait for it or how often it stops.
I would just plan on walking most places, you are staying in a most central area. Those "distractions" mentioned by sacc can be some of the best parts of your trip. Wear comfy shoes and take it all in.

You can use the pedestrian feature on mappy.com to figure walking routes/times. Maps don't take into account the type of walking (it's different/more tiring walking on cobblestones).
