Walking distances in Rome
 

Can anyone tell me how far is it from the Pantheon to Santa Maria Maggiore? I would like to walk from SMM to St. Giovanni in Laterno to the Roman Forum Colosseum and work my way back to the Pantheon.

The Pantheon to SMM is about a 45 minute walk, mostly uphill. SMM to San Giovanni Laterano is about a 30 minute walk, downhill. San Giovanni Laterano to the Colosseum is a 15 minute walk, uphill. Colosseum to Pantheon is a 40 minute walk, relatively flat.

I love walking Rome. Keep in mind, though, that the estimated times do not include stops for cappuccini, gelati, shopping and/or all those moments when you want to just take it all in. It's just such an amazing city, you won't want to feel like getting from point to point is the object of your day...because there's just so much to do and see in between those points!

I must be a speed walker but the only time estimate I agree with is Colosseum to San Giovanni about 15 minute. I've walked from Termini to the Vatican in 30 minutes - a longer walk than the others listed. I guess it could take 40 minutes to walk from the Colosseum to the Pantheon is you stop to sightsee along the way. Maybe I'm the one that needs to slow down! :)

I was wondering about the distance between Stazione Trastevere and Hotel Santa Maria. Our group is arriving at Fiumicino and would like to take the train to Stazione Trastevere as it would seem to be nearer/more convenient to Hotel Santa Maria. thanx

The walk from Stazione Trastevere to the Santa Maria would be about 30 minutes, especially with luggage. There are a couple of bus lines that run from the station up Viale Trastevere. Get off by the church of San Crisogno and walk a couple of blocks northwest to the hotel.
BigBlueMarble, you really must be a FAST walker or have wings to make it from Termini to the Vatican in 30 minutes. It takes the average person 10 minutes just to walk from the obelisk in Piazza San Pietro down Via Conciliazione to the bridge. In around three dozen trips to Rome, I've walked the routes the OP mentions many times and stand by my estimates for the average, sightseeing tourist going at a moderate pace.

There is another thread called public transportation from Trastevere which should answer your questions about how to get to your hotel--assuming it is near Santa Maria in T. It explains which train and tram to take. The tram is only 1 euro/pp--much better than walking.
The thread also has other info on public transportation options from Trastevere. If you have questions after reading it, please ask for more detail.

I'll be staying at Hotel Santa Maria in 6 more days. I thought about a train to Trastevere plus either walk or tram to get closer. But, finally decided to book a car service from the airport to the Hotel. Didnt want to drag luggage around and make transportation transfers, esp. after flying so many hours overnight

i had written to the Santa Maria and they had responded to take the #8 tram from the stazione and get off at Largo belli then via lungaretta to the Square...then via font dell-olio which becomes picolo del piede where Santa Maria is at.

can i suggest that you don't try to be too ambitious with your walking in Rome - remember that you have other days on which you will need to use your feet!

we stayed near the colosseum last year, and started off doing far too much walking back and forth to the centro storico every day, thinking it would be fun to walk everywhere. after a discovering a new disease - "Roman Foot", we got wise to the problem and started using public transport a lot more, saving the walking for when we really wanted to see something. remember that you will be walking around the forum and the colosseum, not just looking at them.

so to take the example you give, I would use public transport to get to SMM, then start my walking. Alternatively, go straight to San Giovanni by public transport, and leave SMM for another time. less is more.

Loanna-from Pantheon, just take the bus down the Via del Corso, past Piazza Venezia to the Via Fori Imperiali, to Via Cavour-then you can walk, or take a bus from Cavour right up to SMM. Alternatively, if you get yourself to Termini, you can walk to SMM in about 5 minutes or less.

But at any rate, try to get to SMM in the evening, particularly-the lit frescos on the front of the Basilica are absolutely stunning-and there is a bar cafe just across the street where you can eat, drink, have a gelato and just admire those frescos. Also, many good little restaurants in and around SMM-one just to the side of SMM-Due Colonne-excellent home-cooked specials-this is a very serene area at night.

annhig, the Coliseum IS in the Centro Storico. And I wouldn't discourage anybody from walking as much as they can around central Rome. It's so much a part of the fun. Sturdy walking shoes or sandals are a must, however.

Personally I walk more slowly when it is hotter so it does depend on the time of year. You need to factor in getting around other tourists, changing to the shady side of the street and so on. If very hot you will also need more stops for drinks etc. If you are out early when it is cool and the streets are comparatively quiet then you will probably walk more quickly. If you are used to walking it is a very walkable city.
