Walking Directions in Venice?

Can anyone give me walking directions from Piazza San Marco to the vaporetto stop at Fondamenta Nuove? (where the Murano/Burano boats leave from). I'm looking at a map but it looks hopelessly confusing.

Is Zaccaria dock too far to take #41 (or #42) to Murano?

It doesn't become any clearer when you get there. My only suggestions for navigating in Venice are to know what side of the Grand Canal you're on, keep track of your cardinal directions, give yourself plenty of time, and head in the general direction of your destination. Major streets will suddenly end, tunnels that go nowhere, and bridges that lead to dead ends. The upside is that you can only walk so far before you run out of island.

azzure - once you are there, it is not IMHO that hard, so long as you have got a good detailed map.

for the fondamenta nova, follow the signs written on the side of the buildings for "rialto", and once you are at the bridge, DO NOT cross it, but head off to the north through the top of the campo san bartolomeo.

if you pass the church of the jesuits, [well worth a visit to see the fabulous carved marble swags and curtains] you are almost there.

give yourselves plenty of time and you should be fine.

eurocheapo.com/venice great maps tips

just walk around on the main steets no shortcuts or get lost

or better buy a vaporetto pass and ride anywhere you want

Always do that to save when I arrive usually break even

after 5 rides all free after that...

Thanks to all - I know I could take the vaporetto around, but I have heard that its quicker to walk...though obviously not if I get lost. I know I can find the Rialto Bridge, so will try to make my way from there as annhig has suggested.

After you walk a few minutes in the direction that annhig suggests, you will begin to see street signs that direct you to Fondamenta Nuove.

After a total of 8 weeks in Venice so far I'm still quite capable of getting lost on such a walk. My only strategy is to have a good map (The Rough Guide Map has served me well for walking around purposes) and keep rechecking. At some point you *may* start noticing signs to 'Fondamenta Nove', or you may not :-) Even getting lost, walking is quicker and more pleasant than getting the vaporetto.

Can you get to Campo Santa Maria Formosa? It's not far and not too complicated from San Marco. From there, follow the signs to Fonda. Nuove. You'll be half way there already.

Getting lost in Venice is actually my favorite part of being there. Seriously.

Getting lost isn't my favorite part of being in Venice, but it certainly is a part of the experience.

We were in an apartment not far from Fondamenta N. for week and we were lost on the way home every night. Not so bad during the day, but we were always lost on the last trip home each night.

My husband wasn't fightened, but then, he had never see Don't Look Now.

In the day I have rarely found finding my way difficult, though I have not always followed an obvious route. nighttimes are definitely a different matter. we got seriously lost one night - eventually we found some local to accost and rolled in at about 1.30 am, to find that our kids [who had decided not to accompany us on our "pub" crawl] hadn't noticed.

before you tell social services, the said "kids" were 20 and 17 at the time.

Hotel staff is usually very helpful once you get there. Also, the staff at the ticket offices for the vaporetto ticket offices are also very helpful if you ahppen to be able to catch a quick line (queue) to ask for directions.
