Walking at night in Paris

We will be going to Paris the first week in September and will be staying in the Marais district on the Rue du Bourg Tibourg near the Rue de Rivoli. We'd like to walk to the Chez Rene restaurant one evening. Will it be safe to walk there after dark?

Yes. It's safe to walk just about anywhere in Paris after dark. Certainly much safer than in just about any North American city.

I have always felt very safe walking in Paris. It's big city, so just use normal precautions for a big city.

We've stayed on Rue du Bourg Tibourg and loved the area. Have a great trip!

The Marais is very nice and a great place to walk, night or day. There are very few spots in Paris where you would have any reason to feel nervous walking after dark, and none of them are anywhere near any place that you might be interested in visiting in the city.

One reason for the safety of the city is that many areas are crowded with people, even late at night. Bad guys really can't get away with anything without having dozens of witnesses.

I wouldn;t walk alone down any dark alleys at 4 am - but walking around a tourist area at any reasonable hour should be fine. We have done it dozens of times.

We walked with our children almost nightly from areas in the Left Bank to our hotel near The Opera on a recent Paris trip. I never felt unsafe.

My bigger concern was not the risk of being physically accosted, but the pervasive pickpockets that can hit at any time of day.

The only thing I would not have done at night is take the foot bridge that takes you between the Musee D'Orsay and the Tuileries. We did however walk through the Louvre on several occassions late at night without concern.

You can walk all night safely, if you know the rules of city life.

MY bigger concern is stepping in dog poo.

I walked one night from St Denis area of Montmartre to hotel near Jardin des Plantes in 5th. From ~11PM to ~3AM. I was never really alone.

Thanks so much for all your wonderful replies! I am so excited about this trip and will probably be posting more questions.

One of my fondest memories of Paris, is not being able to sleep a full night the first night, and getting up and going for a walk around 4:30 am hand-in-hand with my husband. Marvelous!

Marais is great esp Rue Rosiers area but if homophobic stay away and this gay mecca when I last walked thru it had a lot of open passion between same sex couples!
