waking around with backpack?
2 of us, I carry purse and camera. (valuables in hidden money pouch). Husband plans to wear small back pack with water bottle, travel books, extra sweater, etc. How safe is this? - will be in a city - know it is ok in the county. - Amsterdam this trip.
If not a good idea what do you recommend? |
I do it a lot, but I'm not hung up on what other people think. On the other hand, when all's said and done I think I may tend to blend in with local college students (do you think they notice I'm gray) or lots of professionals who carry backpacks all the time in the city. Do be aware if someone is close behind you and could be gradually unzipping or opening your backpack as you walk. I've seen it happen.

The only people who don't like backpacks are shopkeepers and local folk on public transportation. If your husband takes it off before entering one of these two examples, you're likely to be greeted with smiles.

I can't think of travelling without a backpack. It is generally worn over one shoulder so it is on my side rather than behind and I carry exactly what your husband plans.

NYCFoodSnob, makes a great point. That is simple courtesy. Remove the backpack in any store and carry it in front of you. It's also a good idea when entering a Metro car, bus, or train. People wearing backpacks tent to keep turning in those tight spaces and whack people with their backpacks.

Totally agree with NYCFS and Patrick about removing backpacks in crowds and before you walk into a shop.
A well-placed (but unintentional) whack with someone's backpack in King's Cross station in London a few years ago almost had me flat on the floor. And, I have seen a couple of close calls on train platforms, too - the person wearing the backpack almost knocks someone onto the tracks or into the side of the train. And in shops....can't you imagine the shop clerk's horror of waiting for something to get broken when they see someone with a backpack walk in? |
good advice
