wachau valley day trip
Hello everybody, this board has been very helpful on planning our trip to Vienna. Now I have a few questions on a day trip to the Wachau Valley. We are traveling during the second week of October.
We were thinking about taking the train to Melk early in the morning, visit the Abbey, walk around town and then catch the boat at 1:50 pm to Durnstein, we would visit Durnstein and the walk to Stein, see the town and then continue walking to Krems (sp?) and then later on take the train back to Vienna.
Now, does this sound doable? I read that there is about 5 miles from Durnstein to Krems, and that there is a bycicle path, do you think that is doable to walk the path?
Are we going to be able to get a train early in the morning for Melk?
Is this too much for one day?
Do you recommend maybe spend the night in any of our stops? if yes, where do you think would be the best town to stop for the night.
I know these are a lot of questions, but you guys have been so helpful. Thank you very much!!

Sounds like a perfect plan to me. We did the same thing, except decided to stay on the boat all the way back to Vienna, but most people got off in Durnstein or Krems and did just what you suggest. It is quite possible -- wish that's what we had done. The boat trip after Krems in boring and not very scenic.

That looks fine to me. Trains direct to Melk leave Vienna West at 0820 weekends and at 0838 daily, and with a change after 50 minutes at 0734 and 0930 (with restaurant car for breakfast). The paths are easily to walk. These are beautiful places, good for rural calm, but you may want to spend all possible time in Vienna. Welcome to Europe.

If you stay in Durnstein, try the Stockingerhof for a taste of the real Wachau.,en...,at1/home.html
Peter and his wife will traet you very well and their wines are top notch.
