rkkwan is right. you say that the luggage will only be 5 small sports bags. Also look at the VW Passat and Audi A4- they are the same as in the US. Also, the Peugeot 407/607 can work. Really, any full size car should be ok for what you say is needed.

VWs never break down

The Touran is bigger. But I'd go for an Espace.

Both Tourand and Scenic are too small for 5 adults. Ask for a VW Sharan, Renault Espace, Chrysler Voyager, Mercedes Vito or similar.

Oh dear! We are 5 adults (including two girls aged 13 and 15) leaving for Germany in 4 weeks. We are travelling from Frankfurt to Prague, Cesky Krumlov, St Gilgen and Garmisch-Partenkirchen with luggage. Our travel agent told us the Touran was the car to go for as it was a 7 seater and would therefore cope with the luggage. Reading this thread, it sounds like I will have to have another chat with her about this.

The Touran is a 5-seater that can be transformed to a 7-seater meaning that in the latter case there is no centimeter of luggage room left. IMO the back seats (3 to 5 or 3 to 7) are good for children but too narrow for 3 adults.

Rent roof racks! I like the sound of this! Having never done this before - can one rent them from the hire car company? If so, I assume they should be pre-ordered? What about wet weather? Do they provide a tarp or do we organise that ourselves? Sorry to sound so clueless, but the concept is a little new to me.

a roof rack would work -- but you can't leave anything on it unattended. You can usually rent a rack w/ the car.

JohnBhoy - well at least you didn't link to your website this time!

Yes, many rental agencies DO rent roof racks (and child seats, and other extra equipment).
