I was hoping you were staying at the Saiaz! I spent 2 nights there with an ocean view superior room last September. What a charming place that has truly been decorated with love. The owner and his wife are wonderful hosts. And the terrance overlooking the beach is a great place to have a glass of wine (or txakoli) at the end of the day.
In Getaria we had lunch at Asador Astillero, right on the docks past the more touristy restaurants in the port. We had the traditional rodaballo and it was excellent. It was very crowded but not at all touristy - full of spanish families chowing down on almost every kind of fresh seafood from the coast. It was very quiet in Getaria at night (off-season the end of September) so we went for pintxos in nearby Zarautz. The pintxos in Zarautz were excellent - better than the ones we found in Getaria (but many places were closed). I'm working on my notes tomorrow from my Fall 2009 trip so I'll try to post something for you on Logrono pintxos before you're there. Have a great trip! I'm already counting down the days until I return (97)....... |
Thanks CathyM. I'm so excited for Getaria. We leave in 4 hours. I'm at my computer and my Michelin guides checking zip codes and street addresses in all the small towns to be able to easily program our Garmin to get us from place to place without my Dh's impatience.

mikelg, we leave Ribadesella for Bilbao tomorrow. Think my timing will be such that I won't be able to take you up on your kind offer to help us see the hanging bridge but I do have your directions from the blog. We are not super-jocks. Will this be difficult for people with marginal walking/climbing skills? Thanks. Julie

Julie, you´ve arrived on the most rainy days in years!!!!! Pity...Well, it´s nice today and it´ll be the same tomorrow, no much sun though.
Ok, to get to the Hanging Bridge on the metro you must get off at Areeta station (20´from Bilbao) and then just a 5 minutes walk towards the river. Or left on leaving the metro station and straight. www.puente-colgante.com, you may take the elevator to the top to enjoy beautiful views, or cross to the other side of the river (30 cents) on the hanging transporter, it´s fun (but used by locals to cross the river). If going by car, follow the signs "Getxo", it´s just 8 miles from Bilbao. Very easy. If you need help, I live just half a mile from it. Enjoy!! |
