Visting a Sidreria in May from San Sebastian

I'm in the beginning stages of planning a trip to the Basque country in Spain, with a base in San Sebastian. I hope to be there during the first or second week of May and won't have a car.

I'm intrigued by the idea of going to a sidreria as I love cider, though I realize it may be the tail end of the season, if not past the season.

Is early-May too late? is it possible to take public transport to Astigarraga from San Sebastian, or is a taxi a better option. Is Astigarraga the best place to visit a sidreria, or are there other places that may be better suited?

Thanks in advance!

The cider season is pretty much over by early May, but there are several good cider houses (Sagardotegi or Sideria) in San Sebastian-Donostia where you can sample and enjoy the latest batch of cider.

Astigarraga is especially known for great sidrerías with lots of history and tradition. Many of them stay open until summer. Here are links to 22 establishments:

Astigarraga is only 4-5 miles outside San Sebastián. Taxi would be 10 mins and some 10€.

Just curious--on that list does it mean that you bring your own meat to Asitazaran?

He-he, haven't done it myself. Fabulous meat produced on the farms in the area, lots of local preferences I guess.

The best meat is typically oxen, not beef...

The S. Donostiarra is closing in MAy. Are any other of the above located in (or very near) the beautiful Old Town section of San Sebastian?? I host a gang of 20 some folks there each summer and would like to find something like the classic Sideria Donostiarra if possible....

No, none of the other Sidrerías in San Sebastián are close to the Parte vieja/Old town, and I think few of them are open in the summer.

... Sorry, I was a bit rushed. None of the above mentioned, but Sidrería San Bartolomé would only be a five-ten minutes walk from the Parte vieja: http://www.sidreriasanbartolome.com/index.html

On your way to or from the Parte vieja, you can stop by classical San Marcial for great pintxos and atmosphere. Or share some plates of their fabulous jamón ibérico as a luxcurious appetizer: http://www.todopintxos.com/bares/bar...9&do=vista_bar
