Visiting Versailles by car

We are travelling to France by car and staying just north of Paris. We are considering a day trip to Versailles but I am uncertain about car parking. Can anyone tell me where we should park and how busy the car parks are likely to be on a weekday?

There is lots of parking at the palace, but it may be cheaper and easier to take the RER train! We took it and it drops you off a short walk from the palace

Thanks for your responses and links.

Does anyone have any idea of costs? I can see that there are phone numbers for each carpark but my French is regrettably poor and probably not up to a phone conversation!

No but I think there may be free parking along the sides of the Versailles park - the sprawling park but you may need a parking disc as these may be time limited.

I once parked about a half-mile down the main boulevard that runs straight as an arrow from the palace's facade towards Paris and it was free but that was several years ago.

when we went, there were obviously people parking down by the lake without any sign of attendants or parking metres. it was March though.

Thanks again for your help - the parkopedia is a totally new site to me. I'll let you know how it goes.

We also parked along the main road leading to the palace, about 400m walk from the entrance. It was 4 years ago and it was free of charge (if you arrive there in the morning, you might have good chances of still finding an available place).

Well we arrived about 9.30 and parked in the main carpark at the front of the palace where there was plenty of space. Expensive compared with most parking in France but very convenient.
Despite there being so few cars we had a very long queue to buy tickets and to get into the palace. When we left at about 2.30 pm the position was reversed - every parking space was gone but the queues were very much shorter.

Thanks again for the Parkopedia link. We found it very useful for Chantilly and the other towns we visited.
