visiting Scandinavia beyond the capital cities
We want to return to Scanadavia for 2 weeks this summer, spend a few days in Copenhagen and Stockholm, but also visit new towns/cities. We don't want to drive, but happy to take trains or fly or even a boat and enjoy historic towns, walking thru towns and botanical gardens, eating well, visiting museums and admiring local architecture. I've read a bit about Gothenburg and Aarhus. The alternative, as someone has suggested is day trips from both cities. That's certainly another possibility. We visited Norway and did Norway in a Nutshell and enjoyed it a great deal.

Looking forward to recommendations from other travel fans

In Denmark we did a circular, long day trip and it worked out the large castle in Hillerod, the Lousiana Museum in Humlbaek and back to Copenhagen without backtracking...connections were easy and the entire day was most relazing, educational and satisfying. Train leaves from Noorreport in the heart of Copenhagen. See Pix below.

In Stockholm we found more than enough to see and do without going too far afield...did take in the Drottningholm Palace with a colorful boat trip.(see pix below)

This might give you some ideas of the sites to see in Stockholm

I certainly enjoyed Gothenburg:

I also enjoyed my Hurtigruten cruise (same blog) even though I'm not usually fond of time on ships.
