Visiting Pompei from Amalfi

Other than taking the bus from Amalfi to Sorrento, and Sorrento by train to Pompei, has anyone any experience on getting to Pompei from Amalfi fairly painlessly? We will be there in early October, so I'm not sure the ferries are dependable then.
I'm still vacillating on whether to stay in Amalfi or Sorrento due to the Pompei question.

jelopez, I read your travel report on the other AC thread, and see that you had a car and driver take you to Naples, through the hills.
Maybe that is an option.

We found Sorrento to be an excellent base for the region. We were there in late September both times we travelled there. We took a ferry from Sorrento to Positano and from Positano to Amalfi. We took a bus from Amalfi up to Ravello.

Another day we took the ferry to Ischia which is lovely and less touristy than Capri.

We took a train from Sorrento to the lesser known site of Herculaneum (very interesting as well) and it was very easy and convenient.

We did the Naples National Archaeological Museum and Pompeii as an organized tour from Sorrento but it would be easy to do Pompeii by train.

Good luck with your planning.

We too took the train from Sorrento. V easy and direct. ( and I suspect much cheaper than hiring a car)

Thanks for your replies. Let me just clarify.
We stayed in Sorrento before and liked it, but this time we want to stay in Amalfi, for a change. It's just that 2 of our party want to go to Pompei,so I'm looking for the easiest and fastest way to do that, and not necessarily the cheapest.
If there is no easy way to get to Pompei from Amalfi, then we will stay in Sorrento, which I know has good connections.

I know of no other way...From Amalfi it's a long haul. The option will be bus or ferry to Sorrento or Salerno and then by train...or hire a private driver or rental a car.

We drove from Priano, when we were on the Amalfi Coast. It was fairly easy.

This website may be helpful for a local company in Amalfi that organizes tours, limos etc.

Hi sun,

AFAIK, the best way to get to Pompeii Scavi is either by private car or by train from Sorrento.

If you take the train from Salerno to Pompei, it takes you to the station about a mile from Pompeii Scavi.

Sundriedpachino: Thanks for reading my report(in my broken english).
By now you know we took a guided tour to Pompeii, and were happy with this solution; on the other hand, I am sure you can hire a private car (or cars, as I don't know how many you are); and visit Pompeii for as long as you want(we were there some 2 or 3 hours and were happy with the length of the visit).
The tour takes a route that is nothing special; panoramic at first going down from Amalfi to Vetri; and then a highway north towards Pompeii.
We were very happy in Amalfi and used publit transportation for our visits to Positano, Salerno, Sorrento, Ravello etc.
Enjoy your trip; and contact me if I can be of any help.

Thanks, everyone.
Jelopez, thanks for answering, I'm glad you saw my post :)

I did see in your report that you went by car and driver from Amalfi to Naples, "via Pogerola, Agerola, really unforgettable trip."
It appears on google maps to take about an hour going that way to get to Pompei, perhaps quite a winding road though. (We will have a car)

What was the travel time of your guided tour to Pompei, one way from Amalfi to Pompei? If you can remember, that would be great. I'm just trying to find the most convenient option, probably overthinking this, but nonetheless, I appreciate your help.

Hi S.

If I remember well; we started 8.30 a.m. and going from Amalfi to Pompeii took some 1 hour or a little more with a little stop im Maiori to let more passengers take the bus. This way you can see Atrani, Minori, Maiori and Vetri.
Driving trough Pogerola is really breathtaking; winding and with good views of the coas and the sea from high altitude.

Then, we had some 2 or more hours in Pompeii(enough to see the most important places), even the (famous?) cobblestone with a symbol pointing towards the "lupanar"; our lady guide was a good one.
Then we were given time to lunch and were back in Amalfi around 3 pm more or less.
Continue with your planning, this is part of the joy!!!

That drive sounds really adventurous, just don't want anyone turning green around the gills, hehe.
Since DH and I have been to Pompei, maybe we will send the others on a tour. It sounds like a good option.
Thanks, again.
