Visiting Orvieto on the Way from Florence to Rome via Train?
This is a followup to my previous question about visiting Orvieto as a day trip from Rome. An alternative would be to stop there on our way from Florence. We could arrive between 11:30 and noon, stay about 4 -5 hours, and arrive in Rome late afternoon or early evening. I will need to check that there is a place to leave luggage at the station in Orvieto. Would this be too rushed and give Orvieto short shrift? It would allow us another full day in Rome. We will be there 4 1/2 days, leaving on the 5th day.
Thanks for your feedback as always!

Located on Via Giovanni Salvatori, 17
Turn LEFT out of train station exit

Turn RIGHT up the small hill - halfway up the hill

The time overhead of stopping, checking luggage, retrieving luggage and leaving enough time to avoid missing the train to Rome suggests you could easily be better off doing Orvietto as a daytrip from Rome with no luggage.

4-5 hours in Orvieto for the average person is enough - stopping off en route is a great idea if you want to see Orvieto - either that or spend a whole day commuting from Rome and back. There is a funicular or cable way of some type that goes straight up to the old town from the train station - though you still have quite a walk to the historic city center with cathedral, etc.

the funicular takes you from station level half way up to the main city, then a bus takes you the rest of the way and deposits you near the cathedral.
IMO the front of the cathedral alone is worth the trip, whether you do it as a day trip or en route to Florence - it is a most beautiful work of art.
