Visiting neuschwanstein castle during 7.5 hour layover

I have a 7.5 hour layover in Munich and was wondering if I rented a car if it would be enough time to see Neuschwanstein Castle without feeling overly rushed. .

The layover is from a very short flight (Trieste to Munich)

Waste of time and money, IMO, for a 30-min. tour. Have you already seen Munich? Lots there if not.

You can get to Munich and back to MUC for 21€ on a Bayern ticket.

I've never been. My wife wanted to see the castle if it was possible. It will be the end of a Croatia/Slovenia trip.

It is 2-2.5 hours drive one way, depending on traffic. If you prebook a tour, which is highly recommended, you have to pick up your tickets by one hour before the tour starts. You cannot drive up to the castle but have tp plan time for either a walk or a carriage ride. Plus time to reach the rental car place, pick up car, return car, go back to the terminal... Now do your maths.

I would not risk it with so little time.

The nearest palace complex from the airport would be Schleißheim: http://www.schloesser.bayern.de/engl...s/schl_ges.htm 3 palaces in a beautiful baroque park, and notably older than Neuschwanstein. Ask your wife how she likes these. They are 20 minutes by S-Bahn from the airport, and 10 minutes walk, so you don't even have to bother with a car.

If you are (resp. your wife is) set on mad Ludwig, Herrenchiemsee: http://www.schloesser.bayern.de/engl...cts/hch_ns.htm is much closer to the airport than Neuschwanstein and perhaps an alternative.

DON'T bother..it's great on the outside and kinda boring inside. There are places IN Munich which are as much if not more interesting IMO.
