Visiting Holland In August
 

We'll be visiting the Netherlands for 1 day/1 night this August. Any suggestions for "must see" towns? We have six weeks to make a hotel reservation. We'll be traveling by car with children. We'll be coming from Belgium and leaving for Northern Germany. We're not picky on a destination in The Netherlands. We are interested in culture, scenery and food. We are typically beach goers, but value a great walk and flowers too.

If you only have one day to be honest you cannot do very much.
Before I respond with some suggestions could you please give some more information.
What is your route outside The Netherlands? I ask this so that I do not suggests something way off your route.
This so called day in The Netherlands does that mean 24 hours or less, from your posting you seem to imply that you will only have about half a day in reality. (after travelling from a neighbouring country and sleeping)

AS I suggested in your other thread Apeldoorn maybe - it has scenery in buckets and if you have time to visit het Loo wonderful gardens too, not sure about food but I'm sure there are some great restaurants there. It is surrounded by woodland which you can walk in - plenty of set routes to follow.
No chance of a coastal town on your way to Northern Germany I'm afraid, but maybe you could consider one on the Ijsselmeer, or the Randmeren. In which case Elburg may appeal, or Harderwijk with it's dolfinarium for the kids and nice old town for you, plus woodland nearby for walking.
Or as I also suggested inyour other post consider around Arnhem. You could go to Hoge Veluwe first then stay in Arnhem before heading into Germany.
Arnhem also has a zoo and an excellent open-air museum, plus all the WW2 history of course. Or even stay in Hoenderloo, or Otterloo right by the Hoge Veluwe.

I know it's small, but a day for The Netherlands is not much. Hard to know what to suggest. Come back some other time?

If you really are only travelling through, take hetismij's suggestions and stop in the Veluwe area.

Try one of the Bilderberg hotels www.bilderberg.nl. They have several hotels near the Veluwe national park. Lots of other things to do in the area as well. Most have (indoor) pools, and good restaurants too.

Thanks to all for your help! We will have up to 1 1/2 days for travel through The Netherlands, but staying only one night. We will be arriving from Belgium mid-morning/noon, and are not due to the outskirts of Bremen, Germany until evening the following day (an approx. travel time of 3-4 hours). Thanks to hetismij, I think I have enough to go on from your reply. I appreciate your recommendations!
