Visiting Greenwich with kids 8-15
 

DH and I have visited London several times, but this is our first time with kids. There are 5,
ages 7, 8, and 9(girls) and 12 and 15(boys). There are 5 adults, all pretty energetic(thank goodness!)

Perusing guidebooks, Greenwich sounds like a good outing. Is it practical to do Tower of London in the morning, then Greenwich in the afternoon? Your feedback is appreciated, including ideas for lunch in between.

Also, we plan on visiting Hampton Court Palace later in the week. I know we would enjoy a boat ride, but how about some input on time for the boat versus other transport options?

Totally doable -- you may not end up with enough time to thoroughly explore Greenwich. You can take a boat from Tower Pier to Greenwich, then afterwards you can walk under the river and take the DLR back into town (or the tube from Greenwich w/o walking through the tunnel)

Fo HCP, definitely take the train TO the Palace. Then if the weather you can always take the boat back into town. But it is a loooooong journey and you don't want to do it if it is rainy or really cold. If you took a boat TO the Palace you wouldn't get there until well after lunch time.

It's the DLR from Greenwich. Catty Sark is the station in the town centre. Or you can walk a short distance and take the train to London Bridge, Cannon Street or Charing Cross. This is faster than the DLR and you can use the same oysters etc.

Greenwich has plenty to keep you all occupied for the afternoon. The Cutty Sark and the Observatory aren't cheap, but there is some discount for a group of 10.

Or you might want to split up for some people to visit the Fan Museum.

As for Hampton Court, another option might be a shorter boat ride to Richmond and taking the train back into town from there.

Yes there is a DLR station -- I just think walking under the river to the north side and taking the DLR from there would be a kick for the kids.
