Visit to Alesia
 

I'm wondering who has been to Alesia. I know there is the museum and the outdoor battlefield area but how long would someone need to see the whole of the site? I'm going next week and driving south but wanted to visit this site and wanted to know how long I would need. Thanks in advance, as always.

Although I served as a legatus legionis of the X Legion during the siege, I haven't been back since during my various reincarnations. I am keenly interested and look forward to more knowledgable replies. Thanks for asking.

We went a few years ago. We were there for a few hours - you could walk around yourself inside the museum. There were also some "animations" such as a mock battle between the Romans and the Gauls and a demonstration of some of the weaponry. I used to love Asterix and Obelix as a kid and thought it was fun to see the mock encampment - straight out of the "bandes dessinees"! I believe there was also a decent cafeteria where they offered "sanglier" naturally.

I've been to the neighborhood in Paris named after it many times :)

We went there 7 or 8 years ago when the MuséoParc was still under construction. We did visit the battlefield where, some say, Julius Caesar defeated the Gallic chief Vercingetorix in 52BC to achieve his conquest of Gaul. There is an impressive monument to Vercingetorix there. Nearby, in Alise-Sainte-Reine, is an impressive statue of Joan of Arc.

Just south of there is the small town of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain where the movie Chocolat was filmed. It's one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France. Quite picturesque.
