Visit Capri from Sorrento rather than from Amalfi?
I had planned to visit Capri during the time we are based in Amalfi but was told it is better and closer to do this during the time we are based in Sorrento. Anyone can comment on this?
If so, then it may work out only on a Sunday (in October). Any knowledge of whether things will be open/closed? Have you any great suggestions for a smal boat tour as well? TIA |
Hi Flame - Yes, Capri is closer from Sorrento - crossing time is only about 20' and services are more frequent.

We did Capri as a day trip from Sorrento and it was one of the highlights of the whole trip - which considering that we almost didn't go at all is saying something. However you go should be great but we went on an 'excursion' rather than just taking the ferry. In addition to almost not going to Capri cause of all I had read about it being 'too touristy', I usually hate anything called 'excursion' but in this case both those preconceived notions were wrong. We signed up for the trip through our hotel but it was not hotel run and there were other passengers also. I give more info about it in my trip report - Capri was on day 3 so scroll down to that.

Yes- Capri is a much faster trip from Sorrento and there are likely to be more ferries/hydrofoils.
Can't comment on Sunday or Oct - you will have to google the actual schedules. |

Glad to read (on previous post) that you had already booked different digs from where we stayed in Sorrento (-; Yes (as if you needed to hear this again!)Capri is closer and faster to get to from Sorrento. ONe reason i MSUT return to Sorrento (as the song says) is because we didnt make it to Capri! Four days in this beautiful part of the world , and we hardly scratched the surface of the area. I did look into going there. One day we walked down the road to Marina Piccola, th little area by the edge of the sea (you can take a cheap and quick bus back UP) and there are a few windows selling tickets to assorted places .Capri was one, and at the time, they had boats on Sundays. However, schedules change depending on time of year. ALSO, once you are in Sorrento, go to Piazza Sant'Antonino ( lovely little square), look for the mini "Disney" store, go down street a few yards, and there is the driveway for the Foreigners Club. In the lobby is a tourist info office (which is NOT open Sundays). Best part of this tourist office is its location in Foreigners Club. Go behind for the view from the terrace (entry free to all) or have a drink while you look over your tourist info . They can also set you up with free wife if needed. Great sunset spot. This will be a full day trip. Make sure to check the return times. We almost boarded a boat that would have left us unexpectedly without accomodation in Positano! |

I'd like to say that the Sorrento/Capri route is open all week all year, however anyone thinking of visiting on Xmas or New Year's Day should check what happens then! Pretty sure they run some services on both, but......

I am now thinking of taking a semi-private 8 hour long tour on a boat taking in several other areas as well as Capri on this day. I have read of several companies that offer this type of trip. Anyone have personal experience with any? |
