Visa rules - 4 months in Portugal

My daughter will be doing academic research in Portugal for 4 months beginning in October, 2013. She is a US citizen. Is a Visa required for this length of time? Thank you

Probably since a tourist visa is limited to 3 months within a 6 month period. Best inquire at the Portuguese consulate.

Unless your daughter is associated with or attending a school, and has a student visa, she is limited to 90 days every 180 days, no exceptions.

Portugal is part of the Schengen zone. On entering Portugal,as a US citizen, she automatically receives a vistor's visa for, as previous state, 90 days out of the next 180 days. It is a day count and not 3 months of six months. The penalties for staying over can be severe. If she needs to stay longer she needs to immediately contact a Portuguese consulate. Getting an extended stay visa can be time consuming.

Is the research being done in conjuction with a university? If so, she might qualify for a student visa - which can be for the school's term or year - rather than 90 days - as is a tourist visa.

Thank you for these ideas. She is going to be there on a Gulbenkian 4 month research fellowship. I will call Portugal Consulate tomorrow.

I would think that fellowship would be aware of the requirements and could tell her what she needs and provide the necessary paper work.

Hoyas, your consulate and the fellowship are probably best, but also a good source of official information regarding visa requirements is Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF). Here is the website:
