Does one from the USA need a visa to enter Turkey? Also any recomendations for a tour agency after we get there?

We were told we didn't need a Visa to enter Turkey. When I arrived they indeed wanted you to get a Visa. You had to pay them $20 (american) or the equivilent in deutsch marks. They wouldn't accept credit cards and there wasn't an ATM right there! It was very strange. Moral...have some cash ready when you get off the plane. This was in '96 so it might have changed by now.

most of the foreigners (including Americans) need a visa to enter Turkey, but it^s very easy to get it: you can send your passport to the Turkish Embassy in Washington or you can get it at the airport upon your arrival. Now (in 2000) it costs $45 for US passport holders (it's different for every country). Our experience is that three years ago it was quite simple to get the entry visa at the airport. At that time it was $20. I understand that the price has approximately doubled -- so, about $40 to $50 now. One recommendation: Even though you may not know the exact cost; you do know the approximate cost -- so have enough $20, $10 and $5 bills handy to give the exact amount required -- or real close to it. DO NOT expect that you can hand over a $100 bill and get change back easily, quickly and correctly.
