Virtual Tourist & Other Travel boards

Do you participate in more than one board and how do you like them compared to Fodors?
I just took a look at Virtual Tourist.
Someone posted the question:
She is going to Paris. She has been doing crunches and her stomach muscles look good. She wants to wear a bikini in Paris, where can she do this?
LOL, if this is the way other Forums are, even with our Trolls, I will stick to Fodors.
Anyone have any good forum stories?

Grasshopper May 9th, 2005 05:42 PM

That's interesting. Last summer when I was in Paris they had the Paris Beaches along the Seine; sandy beaches, beach volleyball, bandstands with rock bands, showers, umbrellas and chairs... It was very tropical. Maybe they'll be back this summer?

P_M May 9th, 2005 05:43 PM

I occasionally pop into Frommers, but I don't post much there. It's not nearly as active or as much fun as this board. I like Fodors because we all know each other and we have a lot of good laughs. Frommer's is not like that at all. Speaking of which, what happened to Degas' Disco Suit thread?

LoveItaly May 9th, 2005 05:49 PM

Hi Scarlett, no I don't participate in any board, really don't have time for Fodor's, although I sure make the time.

Bet that the poster who was doing crunches was planning to go to the "beach" that Paris provides every summer. Silly idea to me. If I was in Paris think this is the last place I would want to investigate. But to each their own.

BTW, you reminded me of something I posted on the US Board recently. The thread there reminded me of an old Herb Cain columnn from I think the 1980's. SF resident was in the ladies restroom at the Boston airport. Two young ladies were too. One said to the other, "oh I can hardly wait to get to SanFrancisco and you should see the darling bikini I found to wear at North Beach".

I participate in Virtual Tourist (not nearly as busy as Fodors, but still interesting)..Also in India Mike (excellent advice if you are going to India)..Imaginative Traveller Forum (is excellent if you are taking one of their trips). Occasionally I check out lonely plant's forum...They are all good, depending on what type of travel you are doing. I don't necessarily think that Fodors participants are much into budget travel..I do enjoy reading the posts in all forums and getting and giving advice can prove to be rewarding at times..Although, just like in real life, we all have various opinions!!

Scarlett May 9th, 2005 05:53 PM

Tracey, I have to read the India Mike forums, I enjoy reading about travel in India:)
I forgot about the beach along the Seine, but this girl is going this month, so I doubt the beach will be warm enough..do you?
It was interesting seeing the format for the other boards, I am afraid I am stuck on Fodors for now :)

Beatchick May 9th, 2005 06:09 PM

I like Virtual Tourist because it's fun to give out travel advice there.

It's also fun to post photos & details of trips there. Family & friends can go to read about one's trips! It's a great place!

Grasshopper May 9th, 2005 06:16 PM

Personally I love VT. I've met some really great people there. And the travel tips are indispensable. If you want additonal details, it's so easy to email someone who knows or even lives where you're going.

BeatChick, your Paris pages are really great.

Beatchick May 9th, 2005 06:25 PM

Thank you, Grasshopper! Your Italy, Switzerland & SF pages are awesome with your Heidelberg page being a new favorite of mine!!

cigalechanta May 9th, 2005 06:44 PM

And I thank you both for your beautiful VT sites.
TracyB, you are beautiful.

Beatchick May 9th, 2005 07:01 PM

TracyB, are you TracyB on VT as well? I'd like to see your pages.

Beatchick May 9th, 2005 07:03 PM

I found a TracyB but that person hadn't been on VT since 2000. :(

Scarlett May 9th, 2005 07:15 PM

Omigod, I have started a LoveFest LOL
How nice that everyone knows each other from other boards!
I just looked on VT today, after hearing various remarks on the site..I guess it is good when you need a variety of opinions?
I love looking at various blogs that people like richardab did on his trips, although photos can be fun if someone is a decent photographer. Remember crazyminas photos of Prague?

cigalechanta May 9th, 2005 07:20 PM

I never saw crazymina's photos of Praque. Wish I had.
MINA!!!!!

Beatchick May 9th, 2005 07:30 PM

Yeah, I get lots of nice comments about my photos especially the Before Sunset one!! :D

Scarlett May 9th, 2005 07:39 PM

Mimi, if you look up Minas old trip reports, I think she gave the link to her photos. They were super!

cigalechanta May 9th, 2005 07:43 PM

thanks!

TracyB May 9th, 2005 07:43 PM

TracyB May 9th, 2005 07:47 PM

I don't have much on VT yet, I have just begun, so it is nothing to exciting yet!!

Beatchick May 9th, 2005 07:50 PM

Yes, but it's always fun to watch a new poster start up her pages and then see them GROW!

Scarlett May 9th, 2005 08:07 PM

Has anyone been on Independent Travel.com?
www.independenttraveler.com
this looks interesting, they have a moderator, which is nice in some instances.
They look like they are not as budget as some too.
I am thinking of branching out~

MyriamC May 9th, 2005 11:36 PM

I love VT, too. Spend way to much time there! I'm myriam_c if you'd like to see my pages. :)

I'm also on Thorn Tree (Lonely Planet), on Holiday Truths and a few Belgian/Dutch boards. (I do work in the meantime!).

As for travel advice to the classical European destinations, I think Fodor's is still the best, though. The members on VT and Thorn Tree seem to be younger and more involved in backpacking and adventurous travel.

sfowler May 10th, 2005 01:57 AM

I confess ... I am shrimp56 on VT. And I am addicted to sharing... And I second the raves for BeatChickies and Grasshopper's pages :D

elaine May 10th, 2005 02:41 AM

Scarlett, independenttraveler is completely new to me, thanks for sharing it.

Beatchick May 10th, 2005 03:03 AM

Yes, I get Independent Travler's newsletters, they're great for the solo travlers like myself and is perfect for you, too, Elaine.

Yes, and sfowler/shrimp56 JUST became #1 tipster for Paris (this past week)! Congratulations, dear, you deserve it!! Many think, and I agree, that you are a true Paris expert. Oh, and your Chicago page is the bomb, too!

Mym's (myriam_c) pages are excellent, too, with tons of great photographs. And she's been everywhere!

sfowler May 10th, 2005 04:17 AM

Awwww shucks.
But then you know how I feel about Paris ;)
Myriam's pages on Africa are superb and well worth your time.

Beatchick May 10th, 2005 03:58 PM

Yes, I DO know! As Malcolm McLaren says "I get a KICK out of Paris!" ;)

uhoh_busted May 10th, 2005 04:11 PM

I like VT as well -- you can share photos as well as tips, and find others for specific places you are planning to go. The "board" doesn't compare to the comments you get here, but once you start searching out the various pages -- THAT's where the wealth of info is. Do a search for radiomom and you'll find all my pages.

Beatchick May 10th, 2005 06:42 PM

Hey Radiomom! I'm late in congratulating you on your son being home & the new news is wonderful! Many happy travels to you, uh_oh.

ucsun May 10th, 2005 06:46 PM

VT is really good, but this board is by far the most active of them all.
