Vineyards and tastings in Languedoc

We are planning a trip to the south of France for autumn 2004. We will be concentrating time in the Vaucluse/Alpilles. Wednesday's NY Times had an article on wines of Languedoc that made us rethink some of our stops. We will be in St Remy/Arles for a portion of our trip and would like to venture over to Languedoc. Any suggestions of good places to stay( 2 or 3 stars-or just great places to stay) closer to the Alpilles side of the border would be greaty appreciated. Also, any tasting rooms/vineyards that we should stop at would be appreciated as well.

A useful location is inland between Nimes & Montpellier. This is about 1hr drive from St Remy.

A few ideas :

Stay -

Winetasting is common. Some of the local favourites -
or any you pass with the word degustation ! It would be rare for locals to buy a wine they didn't know without tasting it.

Montpellier is worth a visit.

We were staying at a ferme/auberge one year in the famous old book town of Montolieu and were on the way to a potter to buy a cassole when I spotted on the map, the vineyard where they make the inexpensive wine we drink at home, The Jau de Jau from the Chateau de Jau in Riversaltes. What a great find, there is a lovely restaurant outdoors, where they will bring you a wine tasting. we stayed for lunch(very good) and entered the modern art gallery
they have adjoining the resto.
