Viennese Jugendstil...

I'll be "skimming" through Vienna in the beginning of December so I've decided to focus on just Secession / Jungendstil architecture and design. I'm interested in going to the Kirche am Steinhof - Otto Wagner's last commission. It's a bit outside Vienna proper - I was wondering if anyone has visited this church and was it a "planes, trains & automobiles" effort to see it.

Try

http://www.pp.htv.fi/rhurmal1/steinhof.html

There is a phone number listed which should be able to help with travel directions. I missed the chance to see it in January.

Mark,
It's not a "trains, planes and automobiles" trek, though it is a "far piece down the road" via the 48A bus from the Burgring in city center. Tours are offered only on Saturdays at 3PM. Frankly, it reminded me a bit of a rather offbeat public mensroom with its tiled floors and walls. It certainly didn't meet my preconceived perception of Viennese Art Nouveau.

Marc & Wes -
Any specific Viennese Art Nouveau you thought fantastic? I read that Wagner's Secession for the Kirche am Steinhof almost heralded art deco. Obviously I'm going to see the Post Office, the Secessionist Building, the Klimt collection at the Belvedere and visit the Museum of Applied Arts. I hoping to have a few "nice" lunches and dinners and try to fit in a concert - I'm only there for 3 full days - so that may be more than enough. I would like to do a couple of the standard 1st vist must sees - Schonbrunn, Stephansdom, the Opera house - while in route to the other aformentioned placesif possible.

Marc - was it snowy while you were there in January?

Side note - if you're in NYC try to see the Glass Show at the Copper-Hewitt - Secessionist, Bohemian & Bauhaus glass pieces - really beautiful.

Mark, the weather was in the 30s most of the time, no snow.

The market stalls near the Seccession building were quite good examples of Jugendstil. I met a tour group (for "The Third Man") next to a metro stop, can't find it right now, at the entrance to the Viennese sewers, also a good example of period design.

Thank you for the Cooper-Hewitt tip. Also, I might be able to get notes on a lecture that a friend gave at the Met Museum recently on Turn of the Century European architecture--send me an e-mail.

I know of a couple of U-bahn stops that have Otto Wagner buildings at them, though I haven't the foggiest which is next to the sewers! There are the two Karlsplatz Pavilions (at Karlsplatz U-bahn stop) and the Kaiser Pavilion (at the Heitzing stop). I've visited only the latter. It's worth seeing if you're into that sort of thing, and the Heitzing neighborhood also has a number of Jugendstil mansions -- there was a good walk around them in the Eyewitness Guide to Vienna.

Also, there is an online auction of Jugendstil from a Viennese gallery:

http://auction.sothebys.com/specialA...,1094,,00.html

This is a wonderful thread. Nice to know that there are such knowledgable people on this site. It's certainly not secessionist or jugenstil, but as you're traveling about Vienna checking out the wonderful art and architecture you've discussed, try to take in the Hudertwasser House as well. It's fanciful and fun.

Thanks for all the info.
Here's a web site about Zsolnay tiles from the 1900's - incredible glazes.

http://www.drawrm.com/ztilemus.htm

I've done a google search for "personal Jugendstil / Secessionist tours in Vienna" but am still sifting through the results - I'll let you know what I find.

Also - while in Barcelona I had dinner at Casa Calvet - a modernista house by Gaudi that was converted into a restaurant. (Do the taster's menu - you won't go wrong) Wondering if there is anything similar in Vienna?

TAke a look if Jugendstil is of interest to you:

http://www.outbackphoto.com/places/2...ugendstil.html

Also - has anybody been to "Ludwig van" - a restaurant near Karlsplatz that is suppose to still have its original Secessionist / Jugendstil interior?

Marc David Miller Nov 7th, 2001 06:13 AM

Mark,

Also, a few weeks ago, The New York Times ran a men's fashion supplement with a good photo shoot in Vienna, lots of location shots

Good photos on your cited web site

Hey Marc -
Those pics were taken with a Nikon Coolpix 880 - definitely going to check it out. I bought a point & shoot before going to Barcelona - but wan't impressed with the picture quality. I have a Bronica 2 1/4 .

Been doing some searching - found a Moorish / Seccessionist Synagogue in Szeged that looks incredible. Have you ever eaten at Gundel? It has a rep for being a tourist trap - but I've never been - and the tasters menu on the web site (gundel.hu) sounds interesting.

Marc David Miller Nov 7th, 2001 10:37 AM

I had my birthday dinner at Gundel last year--great dinner (the tasting menu was about $60-70 WITH THE WINES!!!).

I noticed the comment about the Coolpix as well; I have been thinking of getting the Coolpix 5000, but will wait; I just traded my Contax G-2 for the Contax N-1, and can't wait to use the lens (24-85) on my next trip.

If you are in NY, feel free to send me a private e-mail; I have almost put all my Mitteleuropean photos from Jan 2001 (Budapest, Vienna, Karlovy Vary and Prague); perhaps we could have lunch or dinner.
