Vienna to Prague
 

In mid May I will be travelling from Vienna to Prague. If possible, I would like to stop at Czesy Krumlov on the way. Would a bus be better than train? Has anyone made this trip? Any info. on bus or train schedules.

Twice daily, direct train from Vienna to Ceske Budejovice, takes about 3 1/2 hours. From Ceske Budejovice, frequent bus (almost hourly weekdays, less frequent weekend, cost less than 1 euro) goes to Cesky Krumlov, takes about 45-50 minutes. From Ceske Budejovice, frequent train/bus to Prague takes about 2 1/2 hours. There are buses from C.K. to Prague, but less frequently.

If you will be travelling from Viena to Prague, use the Greenway from Vienna to Prague - way via the most charming places in Czech Republic. (Mikulov, Telc, Jindrichuv Hradec, Cesky Krumlov...)
Mikulov is historical town (about 50 miles from Vienna, on the border Austria - Czech Republic) and it's capital of Czech wine and viticulture. There is a lot of sigts. The historical Jewish Quarter, synagogue with museum of the history of Mikulov's Jewish quarter and the large Jewish Cemetery. The cemetery contains around four thousand gravestones. There is Unique Viticultural Exhibition in the Chateau Mikulov. The display also includes a remarkable vat from 1643 in the Chateau cellar. When I tell you that a craftsman and his three assistants worked on it for 38 weeks to finish it, you will not be surprised by its noteworthy capacity - 101,400 litres. There is large picture gallery of the Dietrichsteins' portraits.
Very seductive chance is to explore viticulture and wine in small wine-cellars of mikulover wine-growers, taste local wines. The cellar of Mr. Solarik is very unusual. It is located in the limestone cave.

I agree weityh Judy. The through trains leave Vienna Franz Josefs Bahnhof at 0604 on weekdays, 0632 on Sundays, and 1649 Mondays to Fridays, and reach Ceske Budejovice at 0946 and 2123. The bus station at CB is over the road from the railway station, and the bus is a better way to Cesky Krumlov than the train, as it goes right to the city gates.

The Czeck site http://www.vlak-bus.cz, then English, shows through busses from Cesky Krumlov bus station at 1115 to Prague Roztyly at 1420, fare 130 crowns or 4 euros, but a more comfortable journey at better hours has a change: Ceský Krumlov bus station 0900, Ceské Budejovice bus station 0938, railway station 1002 Prague main station (beware pickpockets) 1239, fare 152 crowns or 5 euros
