Vienna to Prague
What is the "best" way to get from Vienna to Prague? I am planning a trip there in November.
|
See if Czech Air has any specials.
www.csa.cz Sometimes you can fly for really cheap. Personally, I prefer to fly, because I would rather spend my time in a city, than on a train or in a car. |
It's a pretty good-sized drive; we didn't value the scenery all that much, except for our brief stop in Telc.
Best wishes, Rex |
I will check out Czech Air, thanks. Also, is there a train that travels regularly between the two cities? Any info is appreciated.
|
There are definitely regular trains, but I've never researched the details. There are 2 train stations in Prague. If you are coming in from Vienna, you would take a train to the Hlavni Nadrazi station. It is the main station, and handles international arrivals. Good luck.

YIKES! The lowest airfare (purchasing ahead almost 60 days) for a roundtrip from Vienna to Prague is $741.20 USD!! That is for a 55 minute flight! Does that seem right? Surely there must be a train. Is there a train I can take from the Vienna airport?
|
Ridiculous price for airfare. If there is a special, it should be around $150. If the dates you want are cost-prohibitive, then you will have to do the train. (again, I can't help with the train details, but I know there is one, because my friend took one this summer, and did everything last minute)

we took a train last may from vienna to prague. it was fine and not full at all. i think our tix -which we purchased in vienna the day before -were about 65$usd.it is fairly interesting if you bring a travel book to read about what you are passing by. the metro from the train station took us right into a stop in prague close to our hotel. no problems whatsoever.

Yes, there is a train. There are trains between all major European cities. The Vienna airport doesn't have a train station, though, the stations are elsewhere. Trains to Prague leave from Sudbanhof, which is in the same general direction of the airport (SE) but closer to the city center. Trains to Prague go to both Prague stations, the main one and also Holesovice.
That airfare is not normal. |
Train schedules: at approximately 6:50 AM 10:25, 2:25 PM and 6:25 PM. The journey takes about 4 1/2-5 hours. All of these are direct (no changes required) and leave from Vienna Sudbahnhof and arrive at Holesovice and there is public transport from there or taxis available. Beware of Prague cabs unless you agree on the price in advance. Other trains may require changes. Check schedules on the Germanrail website www.bahn.de
Input Vienna as Wien and Prague as Praha. Hope this helps a bit. |
Journey time city centre to city centre by air is 3 ? hours: Vienna City Centre to airport ? hour, airport check in 1 hour, flight 1 hour, Prague passport check and collect bag ? hour, to city centre ? hour.
By train it is 5 hours, city centre to city centre. As Intrepid says, trains with restaurant cars run Vienna South 0650, Prague Holesovice 1115 Vienna South 1025, Prague Holesovice 1500 Vienna South 1425, Prague Holesovice 1900 Vienna South 1825, Prague Hlavni (beware pickpockets) 2314 The second class fare is 48 euros. There is a railway station at Vienna Schwechat airport, with local trains every 30 minutes that take 25 minutes to Vienna North station. [email protected] |
In the above garbled version, for ? hour please read half hour

As a possible alternative have you checked possible airfares using www.opodo.com?
