Vienna to Dubrovnik/Zagreb

Hi, what is the best and cheapest way to get from Vienna to Dubrovnik or Zagreb? We are on a budget trip. I understand that there are one-way flights costing about $200+. Is there a train option instead and is there a site to get the tickets in advance?

Cranachin Sep 17th, 2013 03:34 AM

No train to Dubrovnik.

Check raileurope.com for VIenna to Zagreb.

Thanks Cranachin. I checked it's about $300. Just wondering if any there's any other bus/train that will get there at a cheaper cost?

3 buses per day Vienna to Zagreb, €29–32 one way or €58 round-trip.

Only one of the three is bookable online.

None listed for Dubrovnik.

There are cheaper rail tickets Vienna to Zagreb but you can't book them online with the rail carriers themselves, at least as far as I can tell.

Thanks so much Cranachin! Do you know how long these buses take? Is it safe to just go there and book one day in advance?

If I am not wrong, there is no time difference between Vienna and Zagreb. The shortest bus route seems to be about 5hrs...is this accurate? Looks good..

<<Is it safe to just go there and book one day in advance?>>

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to that question. You might want to email the bus company and ask, or maybe someone else can answer that.

You are correct that there is no time difference between Austria and Croatia and that the shortest bus route between Vienna and Zagreb, at least from what I have seen, takes 5 hours or so.

Panturist is a Croatian bus company that has routes inside Croatia, if you want to check those out.

I noticed in your other thread that you said you live in Singapore (but not what country issued your passport). Keep in mind that Croatia is not yet part of the Schengen Area, although it has joined the EU. Be sure you have the proper visas, if any, for Schengen and Croatia, including a multiple-entry to Schengen if required. For information on Croatia you can check here http://www.mvep.hr/en/consular-infor...ents-overview/

Thank you Cranachin, you have been very helpful!

Don't take a bus, it's too far for that!

Take a cheap but far more civilised train. Just go to the station in Vienna and buy a ticket for the 16:03 direct train to Zagreb arriving 22:42.

This is a fabulous journey over the highly-scenic Semmering route through the mountains, I paid just €26 buying in Zagreb for a journey to Vienna, I'm not sure what the fare is now as that was a few years ago, then I paid €11 or so for a 2-course meal in the elegant dining-car including beer!

The idea of giving all this up to squeeze into a bus seat doesn't bear thinking about!

Thanks Man_in_seat_61. Do you know how much that ticket would cost? The one from Vienna station? I could consider that option if the price does not vary by much.

From Vienna to Dobova in Slovenia (the last stop before the Croatian border) is €29. You can figure a few euros more for the trip into Zagreb, although I don't know how much more it would be. I would guess not more than €40 total, though.

Okay, Thank you again Cranachin!
