It is just an hour by train from Vienna to Bratislava-Petrzalka or Bratislava hl.pt. There are some direct trains in the afternoon and evening. Timetable on www.oebb.at.

It is possibly to take a bus from Vienna Airport to Bratislava bus station (70 minutes).

The train from Vienna arrives just outside Bratislava and you take a bus to near the city centre. You will have customs at the train station and, depending on the number of people, may take a while.

We did this last year and found the quickest way was by bus. Many Slovaks do it this was. It's quick, not too many stops. The guys at the bus terminal are very helpful. Get a round trip ticket. Once there, taxis are cheap and plentiful.

The Bratislava trains leave from the Vienna Sudbanhof. There are 3-4 a day to Bratislava Hl. St. (main) and 6-8 to Petrzalka (south of the Danube).

The Vienna Metro (U-Bahn) doesn't go to the Sudbanhof; the S-Bahn does. One way to do it is to buy the Bratislava ticket ahead of time and take the Vienna U-Bahn #3 (orange one) to its east end, the Summerlin station, and then go upstairs to catch the Bratislava trains when they stop there (first stop out of Sudbanhof).
