Vienna/Salz - a few loose ends

Hi, great info on this board, but I cannot find anything on the following:
1. Sacher Hotel in Vienna - any good?
2. Sacher Hotel in Salzburg - same guestion.
3. Are the 2 hotels from the same company?
4. Is there a hydrofoil from Vienna to Salzburg? Where can I get that info?
5. How to get from Salzburg to Nice, France?

Any and all info is greatly appreciated!

Can speak to No. 1--yes, the Sacher Hotel in Vienna is very good and expensive--home of the SacherTorte.
The location is excellent.

The Hotels Sacher in Salzburg and Vienna are owned by the same company. They are both beautiful, have great locations, and extensive guest services. We found some of the staff and patrons to be a bit snobby (Vienna). If you're prepared to spend a lot of money, not only for room rates, but also for tipping everyone and their brother, than I don't think you'll find higher quality accomodations in these two beautiful cities. More info is available at lhw.com (Leading Hotels of the World), or you may email me direct.
Ellen,

Question 4: There's no boat from Vienna to Salzburg because the Salzach river is not navigable. If you want to make a cruise on the Danube you better do it as a daytrip from Vienna. The most beautiful stretch is between Melk and Krems. See for example

http://www.wachauschiff.at/en/schedule/

Question 5: Given the distance between Nice and Salzburg I'd fly. See

http://www.salzburg.com/airport/engl/abflug.html

for details. Please note that Nice is "Nizza" in German. For train schedules see

http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en

Just enter "Salzburg Hbf" and "Nice-Ville".

Regards, Jochen

Thank you all so much! Great help. The rates I got for Sacher hotels appears to be about $200 US per night. Is that correct? I know it might seem high to some, but coming from NYC, what a bargain! I would rather stay in a pensione, but after 14 hours of travel, my husband wants to be spoiled. If we are in a nice hotel, that lets me off the hook! : - )

I don't know what season you're going, but $200/night is less than we paid for Sacher Vienna in November 1999. It sounds like a great deal...I'd pay that much to go back. To be safe, I'd have a hard copy of reservation showing rates with me at check in/out.

You're right about NYC; we pay a lot more than that for a lot less elegance in midtown.

Hi Ellen: While I agree that everybody's definition of what constitutes a great hotel is different, and we're not into the really top of the line 5 star+ hotels, we have traveled to enough to appreciate nice accomodations. On that premise I suggest the Hotel Zum Kirchen in Salzburg. It's a wonderful hotel, centrally located with a lot of charm. One of the nicest places we've stayed. I believe it would be much less than $200 night. Email me if you need want information....Paul J
