One restaurant we highly recommend is Restaurant zum Weissen Rauchfangeheer (the White Chimney Sweep) at 4 Weihburgasse, tel. 512 34 71. Excellent upscale Viennese cuisine, very good Austria wine list (including a large selection of wines by the glass), charming decor and great service. Very close to the Karntner Strasse and St. Stephan's Cathedral. Moderately priced. Another nice restaurant on the same street is Tavola, a very popular Italian spot (reservations usually necessary). I really liked their risotto, but the house special spaghetti with olive cream sauce was disappointing. Also on the same street is Drei Husaren. Reservations absolutely required; it's expensive and quite dressy. I think it's the kind of place you'd go for a very special occasion.
You will see lots of sushi bars/Japanese restaurants around. I asked a Japanese journalist living in Vienna which were the better ones and she said the only decent sushi bar in town was at the ANA Hotel.
BTilke
