Vienna restaurant suggestions
 

I leave on Feb.12th for 6 days in Munich, 2 days in Salzburg and 7 days in Vienna.

I really could use some help with thoughts on restuarants in Vienna. I would like to try tafelspitz although I must say 'boiled beef' doesn't sound all that exciting.I figure it must be better 'in person'! Other than Plachutta does anyone have other recommendations?


My budget goal is keeping the bill for 2 under 100E if possible. would like schnitzel and goulash suggestions as well.

I had a superb Wiener schnitzel with white German wine at the Imperial cafe. It's probably less expensive else where but I just wanted to eat at the Imperial!

Plachutta is a very good restaurant, especially in the colder months! Don't shortchange the Tafelspitz; with the soup and vegetables served with it it is quite tasty. There are a number of good smaller gasthaus type venues, only disappointment was the Sacher Hotel dining room.

You might enjoy the Cafe Central for a light lunch or even just cake and coffee. It's a beautiful place located in the Palais Ferstel.

Also good (and different) is the Palmenhaus in the Burggarten.

We liked the Griechenbeisl because of its history and the food is pretty good too. It is located next door to the Griechenkirche which is worth a visit.

Don't be afraid of the tafelspitz - it's fantastic - it's a bit like roast beef but not crunchy on the outside and not dry.

Vienna has some great places for tafelspitz. Plachutta is famed for it, but there's a great one a few minutes outside the city centre - Hietzinger Brau - which is actually part of the Plachutta family.

I also like Zu den 3 Hacken which is in the city centre - singerstrasse. They do a great schnitzel and goulash too.

For goulash after the opera - try Goulash Museum Restaurant at the Schulerstrasse . The fiaker goulash is something to behold - with a sausage and an egg shoved into a couple of kilos of goulash - not for the faint hearted. Go hungry!

Many thanks to all who passed on their recommendations, much appreciated. My daughter and I will happily eat our way through the city and report back.

As we have an apartment we also plan on hitting the gourmet shops for pates and cheese and bread for suppers with our feet up and a bottle of wine [or 2!] to discuss the next day's plans as well.

A must eat restaurant/winebar is Julius Meinl in the heart of Vienna, Graben. It's practically a vienese institution.

I eat tafelspitz as often as I can get it be it in Vienna or even in Germany. I have to say nobody does it better than Plachutta.

I second Cafe Central for its cakes &amp; interior, but not necessarily for its food or service, but passable.

I know a previous poster stated that Sacher Hotel was a disappointment but we stopped in one afternoon and enjoyed sacher torte and coffee and it was one of our most pleasant memories.
