If I remember correctly there was a small old church situated roughly between the restaurants. Mayer am Pfarrplatz was closed for New Year's. I keep thinking it was named Engelhardt. Yes I think I got a piece near the cheek of the pig. I am so glad that I was able to participate in this tradition. When we last in Wien we had an apartment in Floridsdorf during Dec.-Jan. I asked our landlady about the pigs being sold in the stands and she told me the same as you have said. Great tradition. The Martini Gansl-roast goose sounds excellent, you have now made me hungry. So, enjoy your dinner and have much good wine! Here is my site from our trip to Austria in May 2001 http://alexstarke.tripod.com/ If you wish you can E-Mail me through it. That way we don't irritate the other posters. |
Novelii has great italian food, service was wonderful and Orpheous has great Greek cuisine. Both are in the Stepahnsdom area. We also dines at the Korso after the opera which was good, too pricey though and Aioli is good for a late, late dinner.

My husband and I visited the White Chimney Sweep just last week - in very casual clothes, since we bicyled from Frankfurt. In fact, he was wearing jeans.
It's rather off the main tourist area, and I don't think it's a place a casual tourist would wander upon. It's a quiet place with piano music, good food, and a very attentive staff. |
