Vienna-Prague Train
 

Has anyone taken this route? Is there a train fom the Vienna airport into town to make the connection to Prague. Any input is appreciate. Thank you.

There is S-Bahn service from the Vienna airport into the city, Route S-7 and it takes between 24-29 minutes. Trains begin around 5:00 Am or so.
The route Vienna-Prague (by rail) best trains leave at 10:25 and 2:25 PM (no changes)..trip takes 4 hrs 34 minutes. Other departures throughout the day that involve anywhere between 1-3 changes. Check schedules at the GermanRail website http://www.bahn.de/pv/uebersicht/die...l_guests.shtml

Hi Intrepid: I am unable to obtain the fare from Vienna to Prague from Bahn.de. Is there anywhere that I can check the price of the ticket? I also like to stop at Cesky Krumlov, but the train from Vienna to CK takes between 6-7 hours. The same applies to CK/Prague. Did I look at the right place? Cannot find the fare for these 2 routes neither. Should I take the bus? I understand it takes less time to travel by bus from CK to Prague. The only fare I found is from Munich to Salzburg that costs almost $40. Any information from you is greatly appreciated.

I'd like to add to what Intrepid wrote about getting from the Vienna airport to the train station, then on to Prague, if I may. Last year we bought our tickets at the Vienna train station for Prague, then after a few days in Prague we bought tickets to Cesky Krumlov, changing trains in Cesky Budejovice. I believe the train to Prague from Vienna doesn't go the route which would allow easy connections to Cesky Krumlov, so it was better to make this a separate excursion. We went to the very professional and competent Cedok travel agency in Prague to book these, as well as other train tickets. Kathy

Also beware the fast train on this route lands in a remote suburb (Holovice?) I believe. I had the hardest time finding out where I was, where Prague was, and how I was going to cope when the cash machine just gave me a single huge note that seemed hard to break for transport.

Luckily I deduced my hotel must be downhill since it was a boat, and carried my little backpack a long way until I suddenly spied that boat painted blue just like on the internet pictures - home at last!

Another note to my previous post: The train we took from Vienna to Prague took us to the main train station in downtown Prague. The station name escapes me. We left Vienna around 5 or 6 PM and arrived in Prague 11 or 12--midnight--very late, and I wouldn't recommend this hour, but that was the schedule we had, so we went with it. I can't remember how many stops we had along this route, but it didn't seem excessive. I don't believe we changed trains, at all. Hope this offers more clarification. Kathy

The main train station in Prague is called Hlavni nadrazi. That would be the one to look for on a schedule. The one in Holesovice (nadrazi holesovice) isn't really that remote and has a metro station, but if you didn't know at all where you were going and didn't carry a map, it would cause problems. If you had to go there, you could take the metro in or a cab shouldn't cost much from there as it's not very far out.

The train to CK is a circuitous route and I have read the bus is quicker.

As was stated above..Holesovice is not in another country..just a bit farther out than Hlavni (the main station). Cabs are readily available but make certain you ask about the price of the ride before entering..some Prague cabs can be real rip-offs which is why I always have my hotel send a car.

As noted on bahn.de, the 4.5 hour trains go to Holesovice which is miles of hilly, dreary walking from Prague. The cash machine there seems to only give 1000 cr bills - try getting change for that in a cab or bus!

The convenient downtown station takes a 6 or 7 hour train journey with 1 to 3 changes! How do you find that long distance bus option?

P.S. Holesovice area isn't on any of the tourist oriented Prague maps I've seen - it's far out in the boondocks.
