vienna opera tickets

We are going to be in Vienna in October and would like to see an opera. Is it better to buy tickets on line and if so which site can I trust, or call the hotel and get them to order for us.

We were there in Nov. and took a tour of the famous Opera House, city center....however attended a beautiful opera : The Marriage of Figaro, at a beautiful big opera house out in the suburbs??? Took the subway (part above ground also) and bought tickets in the lobby from from a lovely lady who had extras. They were right over the stage on the side and we had to lean foward in our seats,....but it was all fun and interesting. People were dressed beautifully...and some not so much....I had on black slacks, black long all purpose coat (no zip in lining, but it was cold), black walking shoes etc and felt fine with that. You could probably buy tickets that very night you attend, wherever....but then again if you have your heart set on it...you'd be assured of seats if ordered prior. You could email the tourism and ask that question, but you might and might not get the right answer. Sorry I'm not too definite!!!

You can buy them on their website if they selling them now for your dates :

Personally, I don't like the hotel option because I like to choose the seat myself :)

thanks to both of you for your info. We did buy the tickets on line at www.viennaclassic.com as we were told by someone that they were reliable. our tickets will be waiting at the box office. As for what to wear, a friend told me the same as you that they do dress up. We will not be able to bring any dress clothes for one night so thank goodness for the ubiquitous black.

Why do people use ticket agencies such as that posted above ( vienna classic). They charge a premium price for tickets- at least 10-15 euro or more for each ticket.

Contact the State Opera or other Vienna venues directly on line .What can be more reliable than that.As mentioned

Sorry to tell emyou that you lost quite a sum of euro by taking advice of " someone"

I'm glad you got your tickets, and it should be very enjoyable. Which Opera House? The State Opera in the city is the best known, but there are others equally as beautiful. We attended the Volksopera House, VERY beautiul and popular, a short ride out of the city center. THe web site you mentioned: You must speak German for I didn't see an option for English. Some of it could probably be figured out.
All the various Opera Houses were mentioned on that web site.

A quick comparison of the Vienna Classic prices versus the original Staatsoper prices indicates that Vienna Classic adds a 25% commission.

Too late. If we were taken we will just add it to the cost of the trip. In any case our husbands will not be going to the opera so we did save on their tickets. If they want to see a bit of it, I was told that they can buy standing room tickets at the last minute. They may decide to do that and if they have no patience to stay for the whole opera (they are not exactly opera fans) they can leave early.
