Vienna on a Sunday
I'll be in Vienna on a Sunday - does the city shut down? Will I be able to find restaurants that are open to the public? Also, are any of the "must sees" closed on Sundays? I have to ask - I learned my lesson when I was in Naples on a Sunday and ended up eating Burger King in the airport because we literally could not find one open restaurant. Would love to avoid doing that again if possible!
Thank you. |
Most restaurants in Vienna are open on Sunday. The same for museums. Most stores are closed, though, including grocery stores. My understanding is that, in general, for the most part only tourist-oriented stores are allowed to be open on Sundays per the labor laws. So souvenir shops will be open, most others will be closed.

If the weather is nice, it is the perfect day for going to the huge park. There is also a wonderful beer garden there with music and a super place to have lunch -- pork knuckle, roast chicken, or other things washed down with beer.

I believe the park you refer to is the Prater. The beer garden is called the Schweizerhaus. They have numerous in door seating for bad weather. It is only open March to October 31. Most go there for the " Stelze " pork knuckle and Budvar beer. |
Find a coffee house and relax with the newspapers and your java. I forget the name of the beautiful place in which I spent a couple of hours one Sunday. |
Can anyone tell me if the Christmas market would be open on a Sunday?
Thanks. |
egerdon132,
yes, all the christmas markets in Vienna are open on Sundays. Including the one at the Schonbrunn castle. |
Yes, the Weihnachtsmarkt or Christkindlmarkt will be open daily.
Most of them are open until 8:30 or 9 pm, on 12/24 they will close in the afternoon. Christkindl is the Austrian counterpart of Santa Claus, meaning christ child. The Christkindl will fly through the windows on 12/24 and bring the presents (as open chimneys are not that common in Austria...) At the moment, there is a search for the girl (!!!) that will be this year's Vienna's Christkindl. www.christkindlmarkt.at |
