Vienna Music Suggestion for 1st Timers

Hi,
22 yo daughter & I would like to attend a performance / concert in Vienna.
We enjoy music, dance, and theater,
are not major opera / classical fans,
but would enjoy a taste of the local culture.

Someone suggested Stateopera Salonorchestra alt Wien in Kursalon.
Any thoughts or other suggestions?

Thank you.
MJ

Here's a link to the Salonorchester Alt Wien:

someone will doubtless correct me if I'm wrong, but looking at the programme, I suspect that it is one of the events aimed solely at tourists that was mentioned on the other thread. It also seems pretty expensive just for a concert.

something like the Volksoper would be probably ne much better, and much closer to the slice of local culture that you mention.

That is obviously a tourist show. I wouldn't go to that, but I never like things like that. I do like classical music and it is easy to find real concerts that are good.

If you don't really like classical music, I wouldn't spend that kind of money on it. I just looked in the paper when I was there and found an excellent chamber music concert in St Stephen's church that only cost about 10 euro. I think that's what you should do instead of buying expensive tickets to tourist shows, maybe your hotel can help you with finding listings.

I have a feeling classical music (Schubert, Brahms, Mozart, etc) is what is the local culture in the way you mean. But there are better ways of hearing it, and lots cheaper.

Kursalon is a 1800s venue in the west end of the Stadt Park close to the Ringstrasse.
The concert held there on a regular basis is directed toward the tourist market .
Realize that the small stage area can not accomodate a full orchestra and visitors find a relatively small number of musicians.
Program is relatively the same each evening .
Stage is just slightly raised - seating area flat- thus rear seats must have limitd overall views , especially to those of smaller size.

expensive tickets for quality received.

As mentioned above-
look to the Volksopera-

www.volksopera.at

This a fine venue - offers mixed programs - often fine operettas by Strauss. Leher etc.
Mozart operas also.

Best ticket is about 80 euro- many 40- 60 range with good sight and acoustics

Operettas often with dancing, a little comedy and good quality music.

There is also the possibility of standing room. Buy the higher priced Stehplatz PARTERRE. Here are some instructions to clear up doubts on what to do once you have those tickets. The good thing for me is that if you are not enamored with the production, you can leave at intermission but will have seen stage set and the beautiful Staatsoper.
