Vienna in Early November
 

I'll be traveling to Vienna (taking the train from Munich) in abuot a week. This will be my first time there, and I'd appreciate any advice, especially with hotel rooms. I'm looking for something around $100 (US). Is that too high? Too low? I'd like to stay close to the city center but w/ decent amenities. <BR> <BR>What would people suggest in terms of musical entertainment? <BR> <BR>Thanks in advance! <BR>

There is a great little hotel that we used a couple of years ago called The Admiral Hotel. It's located right off Mariahilferstrasse and behind the Museums. It's very convenient to shopping, the underground trains, trams/buses and all the sites within and on the Ring. It's clean and very reasonable. Their website is http://www.admiral.co.at/index1.html. Vienna's a beautiful city. Be sure to try the fabulous desert called Paletschinken if you see it on the menu! Enjoy!

Vienna has lots of places in the $100 range. I liked the Christina. Perfectly good, moderate sized room. Friendly staff. And excellent location on a quiet street just around the corner from Schwedenpaltz. You can catch the subway or the streetcar at Schwedenplatz, or walk to most places. From the Christina to Stephansdom was a charming 10 minute walk. Maybe 15. <BR> <BR>The price was less than $100 a few years ago, so it's probably right in your range now.

The hotel has an elevator and stairs (if you choose – sometimes faster). My Single was very large. I had my own little hallway with a table/desk and coat/hat rack. The bathroom was off of this and upon turning a corner I had a separate room that served as my bedroom. The bedroom was very large with a double bed, tv, minibar, telephone and a wardrobe. I found it to be very quiet even though I was facing into the courtyard and had to remember to keep my curtains closed since my windows (floor length) opened onto the passageway that went around the courtyard. A wonderful buffet breakfast was included in the price. The staff was extremely helpful as well. <BR>

The first is Hotelpension Arenberg which is within the Ring (2-minute walk to U-Bahn, 3-minutes to Air Terminal--where the buses from the airport arrive--, 5-minute walk to Stephensplatz. It is a 4-star Best Western property but with the posh Vienna feel--very nice room with bathtub as well as shower & I had a balcony. <BR>The other is Hotel Drei Kronen, 3-star hotel, about 3-minute walk to the University and U-Bahn stop and about 8-minutes to the Opera House. It has a nice buffet breakfast and many of the visiting professors stay there. <BR>Andre Rieu has an orchestra and has an interesting show. Of course, the symphony and opera are first-rate, as well as the Boy's Choir.
