Vienna - How close to the Prater is too close?
 

Hi,

I have read some posts on this message board warning to avoid accomodations near the Prater in Vienna since it is a bad area. How far away from that area should we stay? Is the entire 2nd district not a good place to be?

if i recall it is quite a trek out there.. so you would not be near the majority of sites anyway, whether it was a good area or not.

stay as close to the ring as possible.

It is only a little dicey at night in the immediate area of the Prater. What apts are you looking at in that area? By the way, Vienna, even around the Prater, is not dangerous at all; it is possibly one of the safest cities in the world to walk around in, day or night.

The closest subway stop is the Prater. I was considering the Kaminek one you recommended but since we have a concert to attend every night I thought it might be better to be more central to avoid having to go back and forth during the day. Although the Volksoper and another concert we'd be going to are closer to the Kaminek apt, the other ones are around the Staatsoper area. I'm having trouble finding an apartment close to both areas tho.

I don't know that apt. but you probably will be fine with it. Gasthaus Hansy is right across on Heinestrasse 42, excellent beer and very good Austrian food, goulash and wienerschinitzel, give them a try. Know that Kaminek's apt's are just about 5-10 min away from the Wien Nord-Prater station, so not much difference timewise. Either way I would not worry too much about the Prater area, and make sure you go there during the day and ride the famous Riesenrad (ferris wheel) that was featured in the "Third Man" with Orsen Wells...excellent view of Vienna from there.

Its in the 1st district and is a reasonable price. I hope it works out well when we are there! Do you know of any restaurants\places to check out in that area?

Your apartment is close to many restaurants and cafes as it is in the city center- 5 minutes to Stephansdom.

On the same street as the apartment are seveal nice places-
an italian rstaurant with wood oven- Cavaliere.

A greek place too - forget the name.

Also near-by the famous Figlmullers - try the one on Backerstrasse more room and bigger, less tourists.

Plachutta on Wollziele is very nice with some austrian specialties.

Like molker said, it is a good location and close to most everything. Try Cafe Diglas on Wollzeile for a pastry and coffee.
Molker: Isn't there one of Levant's restaurants on Wollzeile? Had some Blauerfrankicsch today...made me homesick.

I returned from my trip recently and must say that I loved the Apartment Boehm! It was very clean and nicely furnished and so central to everything. It's in a nice area and I was surprised by how close it actually was to St. Stephen's. There are lots of places to eat close by and a great gelateria, Zanoni & Zanoni, that my husband and I would stop by every night. I'd definately recommend it and stay there again if we ever have the chance to return.

Glad to hear you liked your apt. Did you enjoy beautiful Wien?

Yes, it was my favorite place that my husband and I visited on our trip through Germany, Austria and Italy. So much to see and do and so much history to the city. I'd loved exploring it. We were there for 5 days and I wish we could have stayed longer. Hopefully one day we will be able to return!

I know what you mean. Last trip we were there for a month and still have more to return for.
